Stay in boutique ER or move to ranked II BB team to get to buyside
I currently have a year of experience in sell-side ER at a regional boutique shop - it's somewhat well known, but I'm not getting the best experience on the job (not doing a lot of modeling).
I'm in a situation right now where I have multiple offers to go to ranked teams at BB firms. My end goal is to get to the buyside. Would it be better to go work at a top-ranked sell-side team and work there 1-2 yrs, or should I try to stay in my current role and jump straight to the buyside? I haven't had much success even getting buyside interviews which makes me concerned that I will get stuck here.
Thanks
book it instantly. if you're not getting interviews for buy-side, this is rlly simple. II won't change everything, but it shouldn't be tremendously difficult to get looks from MM at a decent team at a well known firm. if u stay & things don't magically change, presumably you'd regret it & ask how different things could've been 2-5y from now if you did. gl.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning to a ranked II BB team is likely the better move if your ultimate goal is to break into the buyside. Here’s why:
Stronger Brand and Network: A ranked BB team provides a more recognized platform, which can significantly enhance your resume. Buyside recruiters often prioritize candidates from top-tier sell-side teams due to their perceived quality of training and deal exposure.
Better Skill Development: If your current role at the boutique isn’t offering much modeling experience, moving to a BB team will likely provide you with more robust technical training and exposure to high-profile clients. These skills are critical for buyside roles.
Increased Buyside Visibility: Top-ranked BB teams often have stronger relationships with buyside firms and headhunters. This can lead to more opportunities for interviews and placements.
Timing and Exit Opportunities: Spending 1-2 years at a BB team can position you well for a buyside move. While it’s possible to jump directly from a boutique, the lack of current buyside interview traction suggests that a BB stint could bridge the gap.
In summary, moving to a ranked BB team aligns better with your goals, especially since you’re not gaining the necessary experience or traction at your current boutique. Use the BB platform to build your skills, network, and visibility, and then make the leap to the buyside.
