Strictly Salary Wise, is the progression better in Equity Research or Consulting?
I know the bonus percentages are higher in ER and consulting has greater salary to begin with. Do the bonuses form ER added with salary eventually start beating out the pay for consulting all together including with a small bonus.
Bump
Consulting from any YoY growth perspective.
Is this something you've heard from peers? Thanks for the response.
At least at MBB post-mba, consulting total comp goes up by $30-40k per year. I don’t think you get that out of ER these days unless you’re in a hot sector, under a top analyst.
Gots to be consulting
Consulting for sure!!!
There’s an up or out culture for MBB, kind of like IB, so comp progression is steady. Not so much so for ER. You can get to EM/Project leader by year 4-5 post college or 2-3 years post MBA, and another 2-3 years to AP/principal. For ER at good shops, it takes at least 5-6 years to get to VP post college, 3+ post MBA (2 years if you have significant prior industry exp in the same sector, very commercial, and lucky), and then one could get stuck as an VP forever.
Comp wise: Associate corresponds to A/C to junior EM/PL range. VP is somewhere in the senior EM/PL to AP/Principal range.
That's great information to know. Thanks for sharing!
