Take GS GIR Early Offer?
Hey guys, just got a SA offer for GS GIR. Still waiting for the official package but I'm torn. It's the only offer I have at the moment but I'm torn between taking it or turning it down and trying my luck in the spring IBD recruiting.
What are the exit opportunities in research like, or potential internal transfer possibilities into AIMS/IBD? I go to a school that is heavily recruited for finance so I'm not totally worried about being able to find something else, but still it's GS and it would be hard to turn down. Would IBD at another bulge be better than GIR at GS (taking into account the possibility of transferring)? Would I be better off trying to leverage the offer in other interviews (i.e. I was so sold on XYZ firm IBD that I turned down GS or I didn't accept a full-time offer after the summer) or even trying to leverage the offer for an interview at another division at GS?
Hey congrats on the offer.
A lot depends on the location. For New York, I know that it is entirely possible to do internal mobility for IBD/IMD. There are quite a few ex-GIR folks in some IBD teams. However, if this is for any other location, particularly SLC, it might be a good idea to keep looking.
Thanks for the response. It would be a NYC-based position so not sure how much that would change the equation. I know GIR to IBD has been done but is that something that can happen after the summer (I know GS is notorious for having a low offer rate in IBD) or do you usually have to wait a couple of years?
It's only SA so take the offer. You can always re-recruit for FT IB with this on the resume
1) its only SA 2) ER has great exit ops , i know people (in UK though) who moved to elite HFs easily as equity analysts, from Barclays, BAML, DB, UBS ER
If you want HF exit take it. If you want PE exit, still consider it.
Congrats! I think get your foot in the door at GS
I've seen countless individuals break into investment banking from all facets of industry, and even from outside the financial world. Honestly, you would have no problem breaking into IB from ER. Go for GS, it looks amazing on a resume, and the training you get there is off the charts.
I would definitely agree with what was said earlier - New York GIR is both more prestigious and intriguing than the research done out of Salt Lake City. Not to crap on the SLC groups, but is usually seen as a training ground for New York. A cheap training ground, at that.
Thanks everyone, leaning towards taking it. Thought working at GS would be a pipe dream for me so pretty hard to say no to them.

Goldman Global Investment Research summer analyst 10-week program - any opinions on prestige/value of experience/difficulty of work/networking opportunities provided by this position? I'm probably going to end up in either the quant or the small cap group and the guys appear very nice and knowledgeable. Any insight is appreciated.
