Teammate Failed Series 86 Twice - Are they Screwed?
A teammate of mine failed the 86 twice - are they screwed come year end? I’m more concerned with being the sole associate, if they’re let go, for my Analyst who is quite demanding…. I’d be cooked being alone. I guess I’m SOL?
Also, I’m sorry but failing the 86 twice is a bit ridiculous, no? Is it that hard these days? I did hear it changed slightly…
Based on the most helpful WSO content, failing the Series 86 twice isn't necessarily a career-ending situation, but it does raise concerns. The Series 86/87 exams are critical for Equity Research professionals, and failing multiple times could reflect poorly on their ability to meet the technical demands of the role. However, it's not unheard of for individuals to bounce back after such setbacks, provided they address the gaps in their preparation and demonstrate improvement.
Regarding your concern about being the sole associate, it's valid to worry about the workload if your teammate is let go. It might be worth discussing contingency plans with your manager or team lead to ensure you're not overwhelmed. As for the difficulty of the Series 86, it is known to be challenging, especially for those who aren't well-versed in the quantitative and analytical aspects of Equity Research. Preparation strategies like using Knopman materials, focusing on key topics, and practicing extensively with QBank questions can make a significant difference.
If you're feeling the pressure, it might also help to communicate your concerns proactively to your team or manager to ensure you're supported in case the situation escalates.
