Types of Equity Research Positions

Hey everyone, I am currently a 5th Year at UVA. I've recently begun looking outside into finance as a career field that I may want to pursue and have an interest in Equity Research. I was talking to a friend who knows someone at Deutsche Bank they were willing to give me the contact for but the problem is that this person does Financial Exchange Research. Is this a type of Equity Research? If not could someone shed light on what this is and how it compares to ER?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Financial Exchange Research is not a traditional type of Equity Research (ER). Here's a breakdown to clarify:

  1. Equity Research (ER):
ER typically involves analyzing individual companies or sectors to provide investment recommendations. Analysts focus on creating detailed reports, financial models, and valuations to advise clients (e.g., hedge funds, mutual funds) on whether to buy, sell, or hold specific stocks.

  2. Financial Exchange Research:
This is more niche and focuses on analyzing financial exchanges (e.g., NYSE, NASDAQ, or derivatives exchanges). Instead of individual companies, the research revolves around the performance, operations, and trends of these exchanges. It may also involve studying trading volumes, market structure, and regulatory impacts.

Key Differences:

  • Scope: ER focuses on companies/sectors, while Financial Exchange Research targets the infrastructure and operations of financial markets.
  • Clients: ER serves buy-side clients (e.g., asset managers), while Financial Exchange Research might cater to institutional clients, regulators, or the exchanges themselves.
  • Skill Overlap: Both require strong analytical skills, but Financial Exchange Research may demand a deeper understanding of market mechanics and trading systems.

If you're interested in ER, connecting with someone in Financial Exchange Research could still be valuable. It might provide insights into market dynamics and help you network within the broader finance industry.
