No not really a waste. I doubt these analysts are making much money of those particular names but you are expected to know something about the biggest names in your industry.

If you're an equity research analyst, you are probably not crafting your own story on these but you have to know what was said on the earnings call and what the big items were.

You look like an idiot as an analyst if you cover only small squirrely companies but don't have anything to say when the topic switches to Google or Apple (which it will).
