I have some sort of Jack Spade bag that I got on sale when I was in college. I think you can't go wrong with a Filson bag if you want to splurge a little.
Tumi (standard consulting bag)
Two main styles that look good. A nice slim computer bag/modern briefcase or a very high-end business backpack like. Stay away from most backpacks or bulky messenger bags because you'll like an intern or someone who works in the back office.
Stick to black with silver accents and business style. Leather is preferred or very high end business fabrics like some of the Tumi Nylon or something. No canvas, no normal backpack or messenger material.
I have a few recommendations, and although they're pricey, I think they're worth it since you use it a lot:
Can't really go wrong with Tumi. Some of their stuff is more utilitarian and isn't as attractive, but if you pick the right bag, it will be solidly built and is dependable. They have a bag, think it's the Hamilton? something, that has some really cool accents. Wide range of price points for Tumi too which is nice.
Shinola makes some really great American-made leather bags and backpacks that look amazing and feel great
I personally have a Symthson black leather brief which is really nice and has done well. Classy, well-built. Think it's maybe 1500 though, which is definitely unnecessary, especially for consulting.
Have seen some quality Montblanc and Longchamp bags too.
AVOID OBNOXIOUS BRANDED SHIT!!!!! A kid in my analyst class has a burberry check brief and he isn't British or gay and people shit on him for it. It's not about the price, it's about being an arrogant fuck.

Got an Allen Edmonds briefcase for a great price for my birthday, which was right around Christmas, so I caught the sales.
Quality leather as is all their products. Weathered and wares EXTREMELY well. Have received tons of compliments on it and looks great. Not too small no too bulky.
I just got a samsonite standard brief for $60. I was looking at the Tumi store and couldn’t rationalize buying a Tumi for $300, when the Samsonite was nearly the same in terms of looks and quality...as well as knowing they are probably made by the same manufacturer
i have tried to use a solid briefcase while working as a manager...but it really wasn t for me! I work a lot withmy laptop and do presentations and stuff like that, so i ended up choosing a nice laptop backpack from Swiss Gear. Smooth simple and extremely functional!
Fossil - Defender Workbag. Nice leather and looks good without you looking like a pompous dick. Used it for a banking internship and loved it.

i think the key is, and you've already identified it by asking about shoulder bags, is to stay away from your old standby jansport or northface backpack from high school and you're okay
I suggest a Jack Spade. It's about $120, extremely durable, easy to clean, insulated, waterproof, and conservative. I've used one daily for three years, and I haven't noticed a single fray or blemish.
what do you think of associates who carry a tumi leather case ?
Pretty much everyone in my division carries Tumi bags. (MDs, VPs, Assoc, Analysts)
They are a great investment, and more importantly look classy.
Company bag. No reason to get anything nicer unless you're senior.

Tumi bags hold up well, they last a long time, they are very basic which means they won't go out of style any time soon, and they are generally considered to be good quality bags.

I do quiet a bit of traveling with my tumi backpack and luggage... still looks like new after 4 years of heavy use.
I went to a management meeting the other day and my entire deal team had Tumi bags (some used more than 1). It is a good investment if you have the cash, but otherwise not necessary.
If you have access to a car, there's a Tumi factory store up in Central Valley. Good way to save a buck or two on a Tumi if you're a new analyst or associate.
I've never heard of them. Pretty reasonable prices with "modern" styles. I'll check one out next time I'm bag shopping...

Little casual in my opinion. Whats the office dress code? Is business casual... maybe. If jeans, definitely. If business formal, no way.

Yeah, too student-on-campus for work. Get one a bit smarter, preferably in a dark colour - best way to get a smart one if on a tight budget.
Alternatively just save a little and get a nice $700-$1000 piece. It should last you your analyst years and will look great without spending outrageous cash.

A couple of people in my office have the bag found at the link below. It reminds me of the one you posted and the vintage look is cool. I rotate between one of maybe three or four bags, all of them freebie bags inscribed with my bank's logo. I'm always bringing random shit to the office. Gym clothes, keys, sneakers, winter boots, bills, chargers, food items for my cube, my folding umbrella, whatever...it's always something. Nobody gives a shit what bag you have and nobody will really even see it. I wear big boots to the office when it rains or snows. I look ridiculous but nobody gives a shit because they know it keeps my feet dry on my commute. It's the same way with the bag IMO. It's just how I transport items between home and work.
I would no sooner spend $700 to $1000 on a bag than poke needles in my eyes!

It's a good bag and a fine size, especially if you're going to be carrying around a laptop. Try not to focus too much on the trivial things - the bag is nice and a good size.

Depends on the group - I only had to when I traveled, and many in other groups I know of frequently did (whether for travel, to work at home, or just because they didn't want to keep it locked up at their desk).

I am not an analyst, but I would think the bag size would depend on the size of your laptop (if you have to carry one) and all the gear you usually carry with you to work. Another good brand to explore business cases is Briggs & Riley if you’re not entirely happy with the one you have.
