Custom tailors abroad

Hi guys,

I'm looking to buy two new suits and some dress shirts. I don't want to spend a ton of money and my normal course of action would just be to go get some stuff off the rack, but I'm interested in potentially getting clothes made by one of those foreign tailors that (I've heard) make good quality stuff cheap. From googling, it looks like there are lots of tailors in HK, Vietnam, India, Thailand, etc who do this, and the prices (especially for Vietnam, India, Thailand) are much better than I would expect to pay here for an off the rack suit. A trip to India or Vietnam would negate most or all of the cost-savings, but most of the websites I've come across have diagrams showing you how you can make measurements on yourself, send them in to them, and they will build your clothes based on these measurements.

So my questions are:

  • Has anyone had this done with an overseas tailor? Can you share your experience?

-Has anyone done the "take your own measurements" thing, and sent them to an overseas tailor? What are your experiences with this? I'm thinking that even if the fit isn't absolutely perfect I could take the stuff to a local tailor to get minor adjustments made.

BTW, I'm not picky about clothes. I'm just looking for clothes that will look good at work and not wear out after a few months.

I'm looking in particular at this site:

http://www.dress-for-success.com/

They have a link on their site with a USA Today article about them, and it says that John Kerry, George Bush, etc. have bought suits there, so it seems like quality would be pretty good...

Thanks

I've used mytailorstore and they were excellent. I sent my measurements and everything was done as I expected, I received the suit within one week and I couldn't be happier.

WW Chan, Gordan Yao, Ascot Chang are all top-of-the-line HK tailors. These places will likely cost you an arm and a leg, however, so if you're looking abroad for something super super cheap, these guys might not be the best bet.

Ascot Chang had a 50% discount on custom shirts and suits for the graduating class of 2009, though, which makes it much more affordable for a recent grad. Maybe they'll doing something similar next year?

There's also a shirtmaker called Jantzen that does good work in HK, although the reliability of their quality control is unpredictable.

Never ever use Mytailorstore, they hide the facts and it is as good as going to get cheated. I would not recommend this store to any one

Instead of blaming someone i suggest you explain this also that how you have been cheated so that others can decide that you are really been cheated or it was you your fault.
