Dressing formally - 16 years old
When you were around this age did you even think about dressing formally even tho you didn't have to? I'm probably the only one in my class that wears a formal dress shirt on regular basis because I believe in looking formal no matter where you are, or how old you are. Were you guys like this? or were you rolling around with sweaters, abercombie t-shirts etc?
Jesus...
Forget my age, thanks.
Christ

Do I need to be a banker to get a question answered around here?
Seriously? Look kid, I go to the Harvard Business School and am surrounded by PE/VC/HF types, bankers and consultants. Some of us wear dress shirts to class, but the majority wear polos and jeans and a large minority wears t-shirts and jeans. We wear what we're comfortable in - if you're comfortable wearing a dress shirt in high school and coming off like an elitist, then by all means do it. But your disrespectful attitude says a lot more about you than the fancy shirt you feel like wearing.
+1 to Winning
When I was 16, I was working as a lifeguard, playing water polo, and occasionally LARPing on weekends. None of those were conducive to wearing business attire.
So you're implying I should wear clothes that revolve around who I am rather than who I am not? I prefer wearing dress shirts over anything else anyway, as silly as that may sound. Thanks for the reply, sounds like you had an intriguing childhood.
Nerd.
nope.
If you have no friends to hang out with and nothing to do as a 16-year-old, I guess dress shirts work just as well. One of my friends wore them in HS. He later went on to study Computer Science at UW- Whitewater and is now working in Wauwatosa with a wife and two young children. One of my friends on the swim team- he later went to Stanford- would always tease him for it. Oh well, to each their own.
You're a 16 year old entrepreneur in business school who wears dresses formally in class? Somebody's about to get a swirly!!
Sounds about right.
Nah, never got a swirly. Although one time some low-life wankster in my gym class threatened to knock me out after I beat him in a badminton match two times in a row while acting casually, shook me up pretty well but didn't affect me as much as it would to somebody else because I'm 16 years old and an entrepreneur.
???
"Wankster" !?
"Badminton" !?
"PRETTY WELL" !?
ah fuck guys, nevermind, dude's British...
I think i still thought tall tees and saggin' was cool.
Don't Feed The Trolls. It's a lot more fun to water them.

People have been answering your question, you're just mad because it sounds like you're not getting the answer you want.
The quick answer to your question is no, I wasn't going around dressing formal by most peoples' definition. If you just mean a button down shirt or something, then yes, I would on occasion wear jeans and a button down with a pair of chucks, but nobody thinks of that as formal.
Still not sure why this is important information for you, but no, I never dressed in Abercrombie. I picked a few basic brands (Converse, Sperry, Levi's, Lucky, Ben Sherman, Penguin, Lacoste, Calvin Klein, etc.) and just stuck with those. Me and my friends just wore the same shit basically, that's how high school works.
You'll soon learn that nobody cares about ANYTHING from high school anymore. This really isn't the place
yea you gotta relax kid, with that attitude no one is going to give a f*** what you're wearing but I get the feeling you're a troll and have just killed 5 minutes of my time.
troll is successful. wow. I can't believe this.
Don't Feed The Trolls. Just Water Them.
When I was 16, I thought it was a lot more fun to drive around in a '67 Mustang Convertible. Got a lot more attention from the girls (at least when it wasn't raining) than I would have wearing a dress shirt.
I can assure you I'm not trolling. Although I do admit I feel very honoured actually talking with people that work at Wall Street or are getting an education that will get them to Wall Street, to be honest it gets fucking boring talking with people that only care talking about fights that happened at school or viral videos on Youtube called Friday.
What the fuck are you doing on WSO then?

Do I come off as a troll? Wow, I definitely need to change my attitude, I've been told this.
Pfft that's nothin, I rocked a full suit in junior high gym class.
Me and you would have been best of friends.
Oh god yeah. Floor hockey is tough on the loafers though eh.
Ohhhh, you're British! It's after 11pm in London right now, shouldn't you be in bed?
I live in Toronto you blimey yank.
Obviously kidding with the British slang, did you like it?
Wankster? As in Wanksta-Wanker? Sorry for doing this blackfinancier, but I'm actually enjoying this troll. And saggin' is still way cooler than the skinny jeans "jerks" are wearing this day.
Maybe you're too old for this term but, Gangster - Wankster (Wankster referring to a white-gangster, thus the "w" at the beginning)
Time to lock this thread.
Son, you were just a twinkle in me and your mom's eye when 50 Cent came out with Wanksta.
Alright, my original question wasn't obviously a good one for that matter. New question, what is the first thing that would come to your mind if you saw me, a 16 year old well-groomed and a highly intellectual person walking down the street wearing a very nice dress shirt?
One more thing, can I get a business card even If I don't work for a company or own a business? I think it would be very impressive and beneficial.
OMG!!!!!!!! DAMN KID PROBABLY GOES TO SCHOOL IN THE BRONX AND WANTS TO DRESS LIKE A PIMP. THE MOST INTELLIGENT PEOPLE IN THE WORLD DONT DRESS LIKE TAHT
The first thing that would come to my mind is:
We need to lock this thread
What programming languages are you currently studying? I'm beginning to learn PHP and HTML/CSS and find it very interesting.
I disagree Illini. No harm's being done here. Mods really shouldn't overstep their bounds like that.
Yea IP, what are you studying?
This is turning into a Bing commercial, I'll second IP's request.
if you want this thread to die than just stop posting. I on the other hand have questions to ask you fellow executives, whether or not you believe it's "trolling" an answer would be great.
Does Patrick keep records on the fastest growth of a thread? This one shot up to 40 comments pretty damn quickly.
I just made this dead forum ALIVE
Where are the bullies when you need them? somebody give this dork a wedgie. Atomic. Please. NOW. And btw kid, if it is not tailor made with good doubles it is bullshit, regardless of the brand. FFS....
Dork? Sorry I really don't want to say this but....
I'm 6'2 and 190 pounds. I wear dress shirts and business attire and people respect me. I may be 16, but to be honest El_Mono, you act as if you're younger than me.
Ehh, in this case, the only reason this thread exists is blatant trolling. So this would be a clear candidate for a lock. Oh well.
Yeah, I think in general, free speech is just better though. You don't want the site to come off as tyrannical with mods that overstep their boundaries. It would be best if mods just control spam and do little else, otherwise users could begin to feel alienated...
I think we just have to tolerate the trolls to a large extent. haha, of course this is just MY own opinion, I guess we'll just respectfully disagree.
You know that feeling when someone is claiming you're somebody that you aren't constantly and constantly and constantly? That's how I feel right now.
Are you not used to getting 16 year olds on this forum? What started with me asking if dress shirts were appropriate somehow turned into a piece of shit thread because I included I was 16. Come on, I'm sure you bankers are more mature than this.
They really aren't.
What skills do I need to be a banker? Obviously communication skills are vital, but what would make you stand out more than that other guy trying to get your job?
Sure. Everything is subject to differences of opinion and judgment. I think the means is much more important than the ends.
We objectively see that we have a thread which exists for no other purpose than trolling. Thus some moderator might objectively conclude it needs a lock. Another moderator might not. There's obviously a lot of room for judgment here. I'm just a friendly civilian suggesting the thought be considered.
This is probably the most frustrating thing I've ever been victim to. While I ask questions about having the skills to become a banker people rather talk about me apparently trolling and the locking of threads rather than answering my question.
Can't wait till elementary school kids start asking questions on this website.
Thought I'd go ahead an throw my $0.02 in ... and feed the flames. To the OP, no I wasn't wearing formal attire/dress shirts when I was 16. But then again, I'd already finished high-school ... Here's a couple of things to think about with regard to what you're trying to achieve:
1.) Are you trying to look mature, possibly more so than you already are? Because your plan is going 'to go south' as soon as you open your mouth.
2.) Is your formal wear decent quality? A bad suit/formal wear can make you look even worse than casual wear.
3.) Maybe you should focus less on looking like something (i.e. some I-Banker/Consultant) and instead focus on actually developing your talents and skills. I've seen enough BS from my former classmates (from a top-tier school). Your thin, and most likely 50% polyester, veil is only going to work on idiots.
Being formal wherever you are is complete bull, the smartest and eventually the most successful kids dont give a shit what they were because they are too busy working on something that will end up changing the world. Do you think Steve Jobs would break a sweat spending 10K on a bespoke suit? No, why does he wear $20 jeans and old sneakers? Because he doesnt f'n care!! Let your actions speak for themselves not a brooks brothers shirt you got from the outlet store so it makes you look like your some sort of a banker.
After skimming this thread I'm not surprised your username is HighClass, but I'm surprised someone with such "class and good taste in clothing" acts in such an immature way.
P.S. I rocked the polos and button downs in high school then again I went to a prep school so it wasn't anything out of the norm.
Go for the tight denim shorts and tie-die sleeveless its a real lady killer. This way you can show off that magnificent body you were alluding to. Also, you can keep your business cards in the back pocket and pass them out to prospective clients. What is your entrepreneurial business anyway? Anonymous based forum trolling consultancy?
IP, answer what you are programming then they will lock the thread lol
Here are some steps to success:
1) get off wso 2) go get laid 3) get into a good college
simple.
Just got back from a great day of school.
anyway, WSO is awesome, you guys mind if I post around? I won't make stupid posts any more, I'll actually act myself.
In that case you will be very welcome sir.
i am seventeen, and in my final year of high school. I wear a striped dress shirt or polo every day (except for june when I wear a tight plain tee-shirt and shorts). I rock sperrys every day, and my blackberry on my belt. I wear a nice watch and ray bans too, and take up 3 spots at the back of the lot when I park my Grand Marquis (with gold wheels and emblems). Nobody says shit about how I dress / act. Because I treat everybody very well, hold doors for people, shake dozens of hands a day, and nod politely to as many people as I can. I have tonnes of friends and havent had any problems because of my affection for nice things. I am also the school president, and have a Scarface poster in my office. Class.
Absolutely. On WSO, we don't hold grudges. :)
Hi, I have the same question as HighClass. Except, I am only 10 years old and about to go onto middle school. I like wear dress shirts from the Baby Gap. I want work at a bank so I dress up this way. I even started my own lemonade stand and the money I make, I loan to other kids in my class on interest. So HighClass, what advice can you give a 10 year old on dressing up and being successful as an entrepreneur?
Be yourself and don't wear things that the people you want to be wear.
Dude as a fellow high schooler I thought I was crazy even posting on here......... I guess I am not the worst then..........and btw to become a banker you need to be loved by your boss, and your peers should respect you. My cousin tells me all his stories about how he sucked up, by doing his MD's laundry etc. And just be chill honestly if people are picking on you now for being weird or whatever, it isnt a good sign because banks (whom are very selective) can pick guys that are super popular and love finance in a heartbeat. Just my 2 cents. You can take or leave it.
What do you mean not to wear things people want you to wear? What kind of shirts do you wear? I'll try to get my mom to buy me some shirts next week.
just rock the whatever you're comfortable with IMO, im 16 and usually wear abercrombie, nike, mainstream brands, its just whatever you feel like
Mommy is paying for the clothes, so keep it affordable.
Hey now dont be dissing the people who are ahead of their times. Shit in high school I wore polos all the time freshman and soph year, every one told me that I was a tool and that wasnt cool. Come junior year everyone stared wearing polos and I was like what now bitches suck my cock
One other thing
" Is it proper to wear tassled loafers with a business suit or not? Don't look at me like I'm insane"
Why are we even bothering with this kid. Look you want a real answer cause here it is: NO ONE CARES. congratulations you look nice ALOT of 16 year olds dress up like this your not some big exception. Now can we please move on to a subject that actually matters.
I'm ballin in my Hanes white tees, Southpole sweater, Rocawear jeans, and Airforce Ones.
I dress like a little dutch girl for our investor meetings. other than that, I'm all that "smart casual".
I’m kinda obsessed with Effy from Skins. I know she sometimes dresses like a gothic hooker but I just think she wears it perfectly. I’ am aware that I can’t pull it off hahaha. Also Rachel Bilson and pretty much everyone on Chictopia or look book. fashion advice richmond
I gotta give the kid props for knowing Wankster.
Let me break this down real quick for you HighClass (PS- get a less-douchey sounding name if you're going to post these kinds of topics at 16). Clothes are about confidence, if you feel good in it, than wear it. That, however, is overshadowed by society's expectation of you. You need to be able to weigh what you like with what other people expect.
Now, I want you to go to a country club and look around. Are there people wearing suits? Probably a few. Are there a bunch of old guys lounging around in boat shoes, slacks, and a polo? Probably a few dozen. While you may think formal wear is important, you have to take other people into account. You're going to look out of place if you dress up anytime you go somewhere. Learning the right time to wear the right clothes is crucial. If you showed up to a barbecue in a suit you'd look just as out of place as someone who showed up wearing a pink bunny rabbit costume, the only difference being the guy wearing the pink bunny costume is getting laid.
Summary: Wear what makes you comfortable as long as it doesn't stand out too much.
Ahh this reminds me of how some guys in my high school / college used to wear suits. You know how much chicks/guys talked behind this guys back.. LMAO.. I hope it wasn't you OP.. HAHA
