How did you find your barber in Manhattan?

I have bounced between several barbers in the city, never really finding one that meets what I'm looking for. I have had my shit absolutely fucked more than once.

I have longer hair and need to find someone who can just clean things up for maintenance and doesnt default to a fucking high fade. I'm sure there is a communication issue on my part but I want to find someone familiar with my hair style.

Obviously I'm doing something wrong, but growing up my dad always cut my hair so I'm lost out here.

Barber recs in Manhattan for someone with more of a flow style? Barbers? Salons? etc.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, finding the right barber or salon in Manhattan for your specific needs can be a challenge, but there are a few strategies and recommendations to consider:

  1. Barber vs. Salon: If you have longer hair and are looking for someone to maintain a "flow style" without defaulting to a high fade, you might want to lean towards a salon rather than a traditional barber. Salons often have stylists who are more experienced with longer hairstyles and can provide tailored advice on maintenance.

  2. Consultation is Key: Communication is crucial. When you visit a new barber or stylist, be clear about what you want. Bring reference photos if possible, and explain that you're looking for maintenance rather than a drastic change. Mention explicitly that you want to avoid a high fade.

  3. Recommendations from WSO Threads: While specific names of barbers or salons aren't directly mentioned in the WSO threads, users often emphasize the importance of finding someone who can consult on what works best for your hair type and face shape. This might mean trying a few places until you find the right fit.

  4. Manhattan Options: While no specific barbershops or salons are listed in the WSO dataset, the general advice is to look for places that specialize in men's grooming but also cater to longer hairstyles. Salons in areas like SoHo or the Upper East Side might be worth exploring, as they often have stylists experienced with diverse hair types and styles.

If you're still struggling, consider asking for recommendations from colleagues or friends who have a similar hair type or style.

Bump.
I've been having the same issue. My hair is pretty wavy and I have weird cowlicks. I went to Skullfade barbers in Fidi once, didn't like it. I went to HairBeCa in Tribeca once, didn't like. I saw a guy at Barba Grooming in Chelsea about 4 times but it was way too expensive. There was a guy at Made Man Barbershop in Greenwich Village who I liked, but once my hair grew a bit longer, I don't think he new how to handle it. My last haircut was at Haar & Co in the West Village, which was fine, just expensive too.

Chelsea Barbers on 23rd and 10th or Edy Barber across the street from the Empire State are both excellent. The former is a bit more expensive.

Trust me, I had the exact same problem when I moved to NYC. Literally would say a prayer before every cut and would leave having to wear a hat for the next two weeks. Some barbers are amazing, but holy shit have I not found one that is consistent. My BIGGEST piece of advice is to say fuck the barbershops and to go to a Salon. Yes, you will probably be the only dude at any given time, but they're legit. I remember fighting with barbers for an all scissors cut (they forcefully wanted to give me a fade or some shit, or would cut off like 2 inches of hair after I would stop them 5x to reiterate I'm looking for 0.25-0.5 inches off). The salons are a slight premium, but I've convinced myself its money well spent if I don't have to wear a hat after every cut for two weeks. I have a go-to spot on the upperwestside and they're great, genuinely take their time and are very familiar with longer hair, so they know how to cut and make sure it looks nice after. Generally just a function of familiarity, don't think barbers are the way to go if you aren't looking for a burst fade or something like that. Give the salons a shot, have some photos of what you want your hair to look like ready, and then be a little conservative on how much you tell them to cut (can always ask to cut a little more if still too long toward the end). If you like the cut, just make sure to always schedule with the same person and all will be well. I had to figure this out through trial and fire but now can get a haircut and come home without having to put the cap on. All is well
