How to prevent shaving rash?

Hi,

How to prevent shaving rash? I have to do so before a photo in a month. Went to dermatologist, and was prescribed a pill to take, but nothing else. I can ask them for something, but I'm not sure what.

Google "pseudofolliculitis barbae" to see what I'm reffering to.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips to prevent shaving rash:

  1. Use an Aftershave Lotion with Little or No Alcohol:

    • Alcohol can dry out your face and make you look older. Opt for an aftershave lotion that is gentle on your skin.
  2. Moisturize:

    • After shaving, apply a moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and reduce irritation.
  3. Exfoliate Regularly:

    • Use an exfoliating gel scrub to remove dead skin cells and prevent ingrown hairs.
  4. Use a Deep Pore Cleanser:

    • A deep pore cleanser lotion can help keep your pores clean and reduce the risk of shaving rash.
  5. Apply an Anti-Aging Eye Balm:

    • While this is more for overall skin health, it can help keep the skin around your eyes looking fresh and reduce signs of stress.
  6. Consider an Herb-Mint Facial Mask:

    • Applying an herb-mint facial mask for 10 minutes can soothe your skin and prepare it for shaving.
  7. Consult Your Dermatologist:

    • Since you have already visited a dermatologist, consider asking them for a topical treatment or a specific shaving cream that can help with pseudofolliculitis barbae.

Remember, consistency in your skincare routine is key to preventing shaving rash. Good luck with your photo!

Aftershave lotion

Using a good, clean razor

Not shaving against the grain if it bothers you

If none of that works, use an electric razor or make intentional stubble your new look.

No, whatever you do, don’t use an electric razor, it makes the problem worse.

Shave with the grain and only once. No relathering to make a second against-the-grain pass.

Shave before bed so redness has time to heal before you leave the house.

Had a similar issue.

I switched to a shaving gel and REALLY loaded it up. Use a razor sharp safety razor so I don’t have to hack at my skin. Gently with the hair, then against it.

Afterwards, rinse with warm water and apply an alum block (will sting like shit). Then rinse off with warm water, and apply cold water.

Don’t personally use aftershave.

Hope this helps!

Using a neutral and unscented moisturiser immediately after shaving has made a world of difference, particularly to the lower-neck area where the grain starts to get a bit more complicated. Switching to CeraVe was well worth the increased unit cost.

One thing along with foil shavers, clean sharp razors, shaving gel, and aftershave is some people have a condition where many of their beard hair is ingrown. So if you shave you get extremely uncomfortable and irritating razor bumps.
I knew a guy in the military who got an exception to keep a beard because of this. So you might want to look in to that and grow a small, trimmed, professional looking beard.

I've found that using an electric razor for my stache and a razor for my cheeks/neck minimized any rash I get. A good piece of advice I once got was to be very gentle, never apply pressure, and let the razor do the work, also to apply a touch of water to the shaving cream after you apply it to make it a bit smoother. Take your time when shaving
