Just got an MTM shirt for the first time from Moderntailor and I couldnt be happier

MTM all the way going forward...forget the banana republic, brooks brothers, and CT slim fits.

Thanks WSO for putting me onto the modern tailor site.

I ordered some CT shirts and am very pleased. I have also read mixed reviews. Mytailor.com is similar.

Banana Republic shirts blow hard. I have a handful of them and they are ill fitting and irritating.

I ordered the brooks brother extra slim fits, they are VERY slim, but they look kind of awkward on me. They are too tight in the midsection/chest and the taper of the shirt wasn't proportional on my body because I am about 5' 6" and have a more athletically proportioned frame.

As far as the Modern Tailor shirt goes, the sample shirt (the $30 deal or whatever) is very thin fabric (but I expected that for a cheap sample). The number of collar/cuff/buttons/cut options are ridiculous, you can literally design any shirt style you want (careful not to get carried away haha)

.I measured myself according to their visual guides and it came out damn near perfect. I chose the slim fit option, but I would advise taking 1/2-3/4 inch more off of the wrist size and maybe 1" more off of the bicep size (only because I like the slimmer more fitted cut through the arms).

I ordered a blue oxford shirt today with the modifications mentioned above and also the fabric swatch.

But best of all, I've never been able to pull of the "jeans with a tucked in button up look" because of my short torso, but with this fit of shirt it looks proper and not all goofy (no billowing in the back and excessive shirt overhang).

I think if the next shirt that I get comes in on point, I might pick up 5-10 more. But now that I've had a taste of MTM, I can't go back to any other retail shit.

Anyone know a decent place for MTM slacks? Let me know. Thanks.

because a human tailor makes them for you as well off a website, unless i'm really behind in web design software, except you dont have to leave your chair to do it, or waste 2 hours of your life.

Only a human tailor actually works with you and can actually make something to your body rather than just guess from a few measurements. Also, have fun fucking packaging shirts and mailing them back if you need any other work done.

But hey, I bet you like to say you have a "custom-made" shirt.

Whats the difference between a tailor taking measurements and taking the measurements yourself? As long as you can add and subtract, and know where to take the measurements you shouldn't have any issues. Its not rocket science and its not an art form...measurements are all the same.

Also I think alot of MTM shops let you get their shirts tailored in your local area if they dont fit properly and they cover the expense

MTM = Made-to-Measure. You may want to check indochino.com too, they're also iffy in terms of reviews. Most large cities have bespoke shirtmakers... expect to pay $150-300 depending on fabric. Most require a minimum purchase too but can be worth it.

Online "bespoke" seems very risky to me. I've never done it and really don't ever think I will. Your best option, I think, would really be to go to a tailor in person and have bespoke stuff made on site.

I've ordered from MT (over 8 shirts so far), and the shirts are great, given that your measurements are right.

I'm a big fan of the oxford clothes, the weave is strong and it looks good.

But here are my findings on fabrics:

usually the shirts in the $50-$75 range are great materials

The really cheap stuff (sub $50) is usually a thinner material.

Collar: Get the medium, or button down medium. I bought some "small" collars, and they are okay but I wont buy them again

Collar Stays: I have the removable ones, they are okay (not brass, but you can get brass ones) Cuffs: I usually go with the angle cut, 1 button. I bought 2 button once, and they are just inconvenient Pockets: None Cut: Slim Fit

One super important thing I should tell you is that get the extra thick mother of pearl buttons. The regular ones are whack!. Pay the extra $5

MTM is a lot different than bespoke. I would shelve the cock sucker attitude. I inquired on custom shirts in Philadelphia and I got quoted at $200+ a shirt, 3 shirt minimum. Pretty expensive for something I typically beat up. Modern Tailor will give you a better fitting shirt than off the rack at a slight premium to off the rack prices. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

Definitely agree with this... I like made to measure shirts for this exact reason. They fit better than an off the rack shirt will, but I don't feel like dropping $600 to get 3 shirts when I get get 3 that are well fit to me for around $100. I wear shirts over and over so it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for me to be dropping big bills on bespoke. That's just my take... they are comfortable and functional, and I'm not in a position yet where I need to be overspending on anything just for the sake of a label...

You can really find some deals on ebay if you know what your looking for and/or feel like gambling a bit.

Last year I found a Canali in navy blue... was under 100 bucks. Contacted my tailor and asked him for tips on what to look for... Bought it asap on his advice. He said it was 100% legit... got it tailored and its perfect.

What did your tailor tell you to look for other than measurements?

tbh, one of the best suits I own was ordered through a site similar to this. I paid $199 shipped and it is without a doubt one of the nicest suits I have ever owned. The fit is perfect and I have received numerous compliments.

I have tried moderntailor.com 3 times. I do not much cash for well-fitting tailored shirts... certainly can't afford anything more than $100. but moderntailor is a great solution. i always buy the weekly sales fabrics. simple guide to measure one's self is available on their website. i wear nice shirts now, well fitting and good quality. yes i was hesitant to try at first. but i really wanted unique shirts and the ones in gap, ae, etc seem to be worn by everyone already. need to make a statement. for a $35 first investment, i probably already saved $500 and now have 3 shirts

For eBay there's one suit vendor who has been featured in WSJ and a number of other places for the suits/apparel he sells. I think its called the Wizard of Ahhhs or something like that. You'll obviously have to get it tailored so Id buy it slightly larger than you normally would

I've heard that MT is worth it if you have the patience to send your shirt/suit back a few times until it's perfect.

Personally, I prefer the convenience of getting measured in person.

I've always found getting mtm shirts inconvenient as many off-the-rack slim shirts fit me well as im quite muscular (BB slim fit, for example). EBAY is GREAT for shoes. Good for Suits and stuff too if you're willing to get it tailored. also, go to styleforum.net and check out the buy and sell forums.Ive gotten mint condition 300 dollar shoes for 100 dollars before

MTM is especially good for athletes. Sports and weightlifting mess with your body's symmetry, and my shirtmaker correctly guessed that I was a RHP without even asking whether I'd played baseball. Apparently, my right shoulder is somewhat bigger than my left shoulder, which necessitates a > .5" differential--something nobody had ever pointed out before.

I would suggest buying some decent shirts and getting them tailored. MTM shirts are great and they can be had for $75-100 each, but it only takes one messed up washing machine to ruin them. Until you are making so much cash it doesnt matter, it would be smarter to just get some tailoring. Shoes are something you want to spend good money on, suits the same. Shirts are just too delicate.

if you like MTM shirts I strongly recommend getting a custom-tailored suit. You can go the route of modern tailor or indochino but it's much more difficult to fit a suit than a shirt. Look around your area and you should be able to get a custom-tailored suit for around $600-800 depending on fabric (unless you're in NYC...).
