Wearing Moncler as a junior?

For context I'm actually a new grad SWE at a FAANG and started this fall

Last winter, I wanted to buy a nice jacket (as I've never had one before) so I bought a navy Moncler Montgenevre.

I would like to wear it to the office, however I don't want to come across as a total dick/too flashy lol. For the few months I've been here (and not having to wear a puffer jacket) I've not actually seen any "luxury" brand items by anyone so I'm assuming there's a reason for that. Only ever seen someone wear a Canada Goose/Moncler zip up cardigan and it was just a random dude in the cafeteria.

I guess a parallel situation in my head I'm seeing is the finance equivalent of "junior associate walks into the office with a Daytona on his wrist, while his manager/seniors don't wear anything that flashy - so now is deemed a total dumbass"

Am I overthinking here or no? I'm happy to buy a cheap Uniqlo puffer to spare the potential embarrassment but would just be easier to wear the Moncler I already have

Can I wear it?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's the deal: wearing a Moncler jacket as a junior in a professional setting like FAANG or finance can be a bit of a double-edged sword. While it's perfectly fine to own and enjoy luxury items, wearing them in the office as a junior can sometimes send unintended signals, especially if the culture leans toward understated professionalism.

Here’s the breakdown:

  1. Cultural Fit Matters: If you’ve noticed that most people in your office avoid flashy brands, it’s likely a cultural norm. In such environments, wearing a Moncler might stand out and could unintentionally make you seem out of touch with the team’s vibe.

  2. Perception vs. Reality: While you’re not doing anything wrong, perception can matter a lot in professional settings. As you mentioned, it’s similar to a junior associate in finance rocking a flashy Rolex while seniors keep it low-key. It might not be a dealbreaker, but it could raise eyebrows.

  3. Practical Solution: If you’re worried about coming across as too flashy, a simple Uniqlo puffer or a more understated jacket could be a great alternative for the office. Save the Moncler for weekends or casual outings where it won’t feel out of place.

  4. Confidence is Key: If you do decide to wear the Moncler, own it with humility. Don’t draw attention to it, and focus on your work. Most people will care more about your contributions than your jacket.

In short, you’re not overthinking—it’s good to be mindful of workplace norms. If in doubt, err on the side of subtlety, especially as a new grad. You can always bring out the Moncler once you’ve established yourself and have a better read on the office culture.

So long as it’s a normal colour (black, navy, etc) and it’s actually cold outside I don’t think anyone cares, esp since it actually provides utility.

A Daytona vs a Casio in an office isn’t providing utility. Also the price difference of a Daytona vs Moncler are magnitudes away.
