AM to L/S equity fund London?

Currently about to go to uni in London. Really interested in working for a hedge fund that deals with equities long term. Assuming I can’t break into the buy side straight out of uni which I understand is unlikely. Would Asset management at a top bank or REPE be a good path into some of the larger hedge funds? I have heard that once u do real estate you can’t really go back. Would other careers like IB/Sales and trading be a better stepping stone to hedge funds? Thanks all!

Depends on the type of hedge fund you want to work at. If you want to do quant, L/S, credit, macro etc it'll vary.

Generally speaking, for Macro, you want to start in S&T, or alternatively, the fixed income arm of an AM.

For L/S you want to join one of the big training programs out of school or do IB/ER/PE

Your real best bets are to break into these funds from school. Citadel/Point72/Millennium have undergraduate programs for L/S and gives you some training before you join a pod. I believe some macro funds have graduate programs, but I'm less sure. If you fail to do this, aim for the sellside/AM/PE etc.
