Best hedge fund for traders in London

Hey,

Posting here for exposure, what are the best hedge funds for a trader in UK? (Exits from top BBs)

I’d like to start my own fund some day, so looking for a fund which will give me good experience and education….

thanks

I think you need to be more specific if u want answers. London is the biggest european financial place, probably the 2nd worldwide, there are dozens of great HFs.

Could u say which type of HFs you target, which asset class, type of strategies, etc....

Also "trader" is a very vague term, not much used in HFs. So it does not help either. Do u mean your aim is to become a PM (portfolio manager)?

I’m targeting multi strategy rn, haven’t really considered being a PM but don’t have a problem with it. My plan to work for BB I’m in right now with a good track record for a couple of years (4-6 years) then move to a hedge fund for experience (2-4 years) then hopefully start my own fund before I’m around 35. (The reason I’m planning to spend a long time working before is to make a good record and because I’m on visa right now and it will take some time till i get my citizenship which will be helpful)

Ok, I guess than that big names are the best to have visibility and attract future clients. A few big names out of my mind:

Millennium, Marshall Wace, Citadel, Schonfeld, Cubist Systematic / Point72, ExodusPoint, Balyasny, Brevan Howard

In HFs most of the time "trader" means execution trader, so not the job you want to do to launch your fund. The PM are the ones deciding which positions to take. Analysts can have a certain degree of freedom and run their own books too sometimes.

I wish you the best but launching your fund without being a PM is almost impossible. Launching before 35 too, launching alone too.

You need a good and long track record, so I would say 5y being a PM in a tier 1 HF is the bare minimum. But equally if not more important you need to know investors to raise money.

Oh alright thanks for your response. You can look at Michael platt for example of bluecrest management, he started with JPM as their Euro swaps trader then the head of that continuing to starting a fund (with less than 10 years of experience), i get it was around 15 years ago but their are examples

Also, have you seen people from investment banking starting a hedge fund via pe/hf experience?

Well I don't know his life by heart but a few things :

  • he co-founded Bluecrest with some guys (ref. to my previous comment saying it is hard to vreate alone a HF)
  • he worked before 2000 in a bank, where prop trading was fully allowed. So while his title was not "PM", he did what today is called a PM job.

I worked for a HF funded by ex prop traders at a bank. They told me what they used to do and they never received a single client order, they were litteraly given a risk limit and could do whatever they wanted. I am not sure that job still exist in banks. Might be wrong though as I have never worked in a bank. Since 2008 I think prop trading inside banks has changed to say the least.

Recently most HFs are launched by guys at big prestigious HFs who spin off.

  • he still worked for about 10yr before launching his fund, so could work with my previous comments of having 5yr as a PM (let's say first few years as analyst and 6/7yr as a PM to draw a comparison with a career today). But this guy is very impressive, one of the most succesful out there. Let's say the basic HF founder is less succesful and took a bit more time
