Biotech MMHF offer

I have an offer to join a biotech pod at one of the big 4. I don’t have formal training in medicine, but am coming from a biotech IB team.

Debating on taking it. I know MMHF’s are extremely volatile careers. Add that with how volatile biotech companies can be, and I’m unsure. I think I’ll likely take it but would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions.

Are these biotech pods some of the worst/best performing at MMHF’s?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights regarding biotech pods at MMHFs:

  1. Volatility in MMHFs and Biotech:

    • MMHFs (Multi-Manager Hedge Funds) are known for their high volatility, and this is compounded in sectors like biotech, which are inherently volatile due to the nature of the industry.
  2. Performance of Biotech Pods:

    • There isn't a specific mention of biotech pods being the worst or best performing in the provided knowledge base. However, it's noted that popular pods can be cyclical, with current trends favoring sectors like Tech, Healthcare, and Consumer. This suggests that biotech, being part of healthcare, might be in a favorable position currently.
  3. Considerations for Joining:

    • It's important to consider your personal interest and fit for the sector. As one user mentioned, "Think about which one you will enjoy more on the junior and senior level, which makes it easier to perform later on."
    • Diligence the pod you are considering joining. If possible, get insights from someone within the industry to understand the specific dynamics and performance of the pod.
  4. General Advice:

    • The decision to join a biotech pod at an MMHF should weigh your interest in the sector, your career goals, and the specific opportunities and risks associated with the pod.

In summary, while biotech pods can be volatile, they are currently popular and could offer significant opportunities. Ensure you do thorough research and consider your long-term career satisfaction before making a decision.

I'm at a SM doing biotech now, but around the time I got my current offer I was contacted by a PM at a pod shop for an interview. He told me team was expanding and that outlook for the year was very good.

3 months later, he had blown up and is now working on the sell-side.

Have never worked at a mm but I would imagine so. So much idio and volatility in the space. Not sure if they give biotech pods wider risk limits, but in my personal account there are stocks swinging +/-10% on no news and a flat XBI.

I’m always so amazed that these people get offers. If I had to guess this is probably a student trying to figure out what they want to go into
