Burning bridges with MMs
I work at one of the MM funds and have an opportunity to join a different one for a 2x jump in comp/responsibility. However, I'm quite early in my career (less than 27), so somewhat worried about burning through a significant share of the industry given there are only a handful of good MMs. Does leaving a MM basically guarantee you can’t return later?
Hell no. If you do good work and make money then they’ll take you back in a second. Just don’t be a dick about leaving and you’re fine. Everyone gets that it’s generally a revolving door.
you’re a cell in a spreadsheet, they’ll take you back if you can make money and don’t go out of your way to be an ass on the way out
I left a MM and came back to the same MM later at a much more senior role. It happens - everyone wants the hot hand.
In MM land, its all about PnL. All sins (well almost all) are forgiven if you are a true PnL generator. That shouldnt be your worry.
How about reneging an offer 2 months after signing?
To echo the others, take care of yourself but be tactful. The company could fire you in a heartbeat, you should be equally willing to walk to a better offer. And there is precedent for people leaving and coming back later. Often, this is how to go from Analyst to PM as some MM's are very strict about not promoting new PMs internally.
