CF vs HF vs PE vs IB - Where to Start Career in 2025
Background: business analytics degree @ semi-target, back office return offer secured @ BB for ft 2025
Seeking advice for where to start my career: CF @ big tech (meta, google, msft), back/mid office at PE or HF, CB at BB
a) CF in tech: Seems like a good way to take advantage of fldp rotational programs+pivot internally to an area Im interested in (AI)
b) BO pe/hf: good pay, prestigious name on resume, i like the company cultures+people I've talked to, i assume better exit ops
c) CB: fintech coverage, was told I'd do well by an anayst friend, but idk if I'd want the grind associated with front office. Can handle it but I'm not yearning for long hours.
What would you pick in my position+why?
Top of my list are pay, wlb, nyc based. I'd be going for business/data analyst roles. I do not like my r/o role because it's unrelated to my interests+low pay (for nyc). I've networked+received referrals for several companies I'd pursue.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights to help you decide where to start your career in 2025:
Options:
Corporate Finance (CF) in Tech (Meta, Google, Microsoft)
Back/Mid Office at Private Equity (PE) or Hedge Fund (HF)
Corporate Banking (CB) at a Bulge Bracket (BB)
Considerations:
Recommendation:
Given your priorities of pay, WLB, and alignment with your interests, Corporate Finance in Tech seems to be the best fit. It offers a good balance of work-life, opportunities to pivot internally to areas like AI, and aligns with your interest in business/data analytics. While it may not offer the same level of prestige or exit opportunities as PE/HF, it provides a solid foundation and the flexibility to explore different areas within a tech company.
If you prioritize higher pay and prestige, then Back/Mid Office at PE or HF could be a viable option, but be mindful that it may not align as well with your interests in business/data analytics.
Ultimately, the decision should weigh your long-term career goals, interests, and the trade-offs between pay, WLB, and job satisfaction.
