I am a 3rd year analyst working in a natural resources group at a bulge bracket investment bank. I have developed strong interest and knowledge in sector and want to move to a hedge fund focused on commodities (metals, coal, oil & gas, etc).
Can you give me some names of HFs that are active in this space?

Great list, Bravo! It might be worth noting that Peter Borish (ex-Tudor) has recently joined Touradji as it's CEO. Given his trend following background, I'd reckon that's the direction in which Touradji is headed. I'm curious as to why you excluded trend-following funds- I do realize most of them rely on technical or quantitative tools rather than the underlying fundamentals, however they are undoubtedly heavily focused on commodity futures and FX.
Trend- followers( techs and quants) tend to lean more towards Global Macro instead of fundamentally focused commodity funds. The lines between all three are constantly blurred in the pursuit of alpha.
Wouldn't commodities focused PE suit you more? Not sure what value you'd bring to a Commodities HF. Strong knowledge of the NRG sector doesn't really translate to an understanding of commodities trading strategies.

Hi all,
I'm currently seeking a gap year internship in commodity trading houses (think glen core, bunge, cargill etc.) and I was thinking about HF.
Do those HFs recruit some interns and if yes what kind of background (finance, IT skills...) My dream career would be to start as a scheduler/analyst at a commodity house and then climb the ladder to trader after several years but how it works in commodity HFs ?
What would be more rewarding (exit ops, compensations etc.) between commodity houses and HFs ? Because you may just deal with paper trading and not with logistics issues contrary to commodity houses traders.

Unless you have a connection in one, I'd move on. There aren't that many good ones, they are small, and the space has had a rough few years. Galtere, Renee Haugerud's fund would be one place to look I suppose. But seriously, you should focus our efforts elsewhere.
Thanks a lot for the information. Yes I also heard that those HFs expected huge losses those years. I talked to several glencore employees and they told me that there are no internship openings and advised me to contact them again after my studies are finished so i'm kind of pigeonholed today.

I'm currently a junior pursuing a degree in Finance from semi-target. Signed a early offer at a Big Oil company in their summer trading internship program. I am interested in a career in energy trading - specifically in natgas as a product to focus in.
I've been researching a few topics on commodities hedge funds. I want to EVENTUALLY run my own gig..but it seems like these types of funds are quickly exiting the space and I'm just not sure if this will be possible 5-10 years from now.
Whats your opinion? Something like this still possible later on? Are there "exit opportunities" for energy traders along these lines?
I am definitely no expert in this field but as a general public speculator, I think electric car is the future.
