Comp expectation at small HF
Hey guys,
I recently got an offer at a L/S in NYC with roughly $500mm AUM, and I'd be the 4th person to join (2 IP, 1 operations). Base salary is $100k which matches what I currently make in Chicago, and I have not had a discussion on what bonus expectations should look like. I'm 2 years out of college at this point, and I wanted to check if this is in line with current "market" bases. I get that salary isn't the bulk of compensation, but I want to know if this a decent offer, a lowball, etc, and how much of a bonus as % of base should I expect. Should I try to negotiate for more? Shut up and take the offer? Any advice is appreciated.
Base salary seems about right if you’re bonuses are going to be around 50-150% of base, depending on how well the fund does.
I have an interview with a firm that has a similar structure.
Yeah I’d be totally fine if the bonus numbers were like you said. I think I need clarity on the bonus structure because I’m worried about the risk that there’s a down year, no bonus, and I’ll essentially have worked 20 more hours per week and be financially worse off.
I suggest trying your best to have something in writing on the bonus side after getting clarity.
Down year no bonus is the risk you are signing for. That's the hedge fund life.
