Data science at SM

Just started a data science role at a top SM (discussed on here often) and wondering how it compares to fundamental analyst roles (in retrospect, definitely should've figured all of this out before I joined but was enjoying senior year too much). I know the work is obviously quite different; more so considering 1) what laterals to analyst roles look like (if possible?); 2) investment exposure/ability to build an investor framework from a DS role; 3) comp/bonus/upside; 4) general exit opportunities. Any information/advice is appreciated!

The answers to your questions are so seat-dependent, and you also didn't provide much context.

$0.02 is focus on learning and being eager to take on responsibility for now, you're like what max one month into a first job out of college? Lol, lmao even

Thanks for your response. Obviously focusing on that stuff now, more so wondering what this path looks like long term. If you PM me I can provide more context.

Despite lack of context, willing to give my view. Assuming this basically means alt data at L/S equity fund that's not market neutral. Thoughts in no particular order:

  • You will be comped well and your comp should be increasing every year for the foreseeable future so don't stress
  • Alt data at SM is actually somewhat rare in that there are not many good seats. The fact that this place hired you out of undergrad means either 1) this place has no idea how to hire and is some random SM or 2) is probably Coatue, maybe Tiger. If more institutional like (2), you will get good training and exposure. If (1), I'd plan on leaving after 2 years into a better fund.
  • Alt data in equities is competitive at this point. Don't let this discourage you, you can still build a good career if you like it. Being a fundamental analyst is also satured/competitive so it's not a reason in of itself to leave but keep in mind.
  • There is no career path in HFs unfortunately. This is true for any role in HF. This means you just keep taking on more scope and being honest with yourself if the work is high ROI and PnL moving.
  • Keep good relationships. This is most important and likely where you will have most regrets if any.
