Distressed funds that were able to grow AUM - why?

Hi guys:

Looking through posts in this forum, it seems that some distresed / special situation funds (such as Silver Point), despite very good reputation, have not been able to grow AUM. while some others (seems to hear Elliott, various arms of PE funds, etc.) have been. It doens't seem like the driver is performance/ quaity of investment ideas.

Can someone with experience shed some light on why some distressed funds have been able to grow AUM while some have stagnated?

Thanks!
