Do you need to be good at math to work at a hedge fund?
I really enjoy investing, following markets, researching ideas and themes, and love the eat what you kill culture of hedge funds. Sadly, I’m not very good at math - I hated functions and calculus, and did not enjoy bond math in finance classes.
Is it possible to get a gig at a hedge fund without being a programmer or having strong math skills? I don’t mind practicing mental math skills for the sake of passing an interview, but not much more than that.
Being a trader/ trading assistant at a L/S fund isn’t out of the question. But being a trader is a bit different from what you may be imagining if you’re interested in an analyst role.
There is a minimum level of math you need to be able to do well. Beyond that and generally speaking, if you need a super intricate model to determine whether an equity investment is good or not, it's probably not or does not have any margin of safety.
