Does the PEGY ratio make sense?

I came across the PEGY ratio created by Peter Lynch: dividend-adjusted PEG ratio, which is derived by PE ratio / (projected earnings growth rate and dividend yield). My understanding was that dividend comes out of earnings, so why does the formula add dividend to earnings growth rate? Please let me know if I am missing anything!
