Get feedback on your stock ideas
I'm on a mini-vacation and am bored. PM me your stock ideas and I'll give you feedback. Can do macro, long, or short. Feedback will be private (please don't share publicly) and will be similar to what I give my analysts.
No length requirement but do explain your thought process.
The general structure is to write a summary, provide some supporting evidence (bullet points), a discussion about why you could be wrong, why you are right, and ended with a review of your assumptions.
If you need help generating ideas, follow these formats:
GDP outlook -> sector -> industry -> winner / loser
Distressed sector -> market share winner / loser
Growth sector -> winner / loser
Ideas for potential catalysts: improving industry dynamics (input cost pressure abating, new technology increasing output/reducing costs), macro (pessimism, optimism), company specific (accelerating product/service adoption, spin out/carve out, viral marketing campaign, factory or production site shutdown, etc.).
Cool!
On vacay til the end of the week, so can't promise much feedback after 5/20.
are you going to be doing this type of thing again? Am really interested in the public markets but I don't have a pitch ready and don't think I'll be able to make detailed and thorough one by 5/20.
How important is modeling in pitches?
This isn't an interview so model isn't necessary. But you should think through the impact to financial statements; ultimately your outlook on revenue, eps, and ebitda should drive your thesis.
If this is real you are a good man for doing this and I will be taking you up on the offer
it's real!
I noticed you often write extremely detailed comments about the industry. Are there any books you recommend to learn more? I'll be interning at one of the large MMs and want to learn how to track KPIs, develop variant views, call earnings, etc. Thank you!
These are foundational:
Amazon - Best Practices for Equity Research Analysts: Essentials for Buy-Side and Sell-Side Analysts: James J. Valentine: 8601404758690: Books
Financial Modeling For Equity Research: A Step-by-Step Guide to Earnings Modeling and Stock Valuation for Investment Analysis: Moschella CFA CPA, John: 9781689598323: Amazon.com: Books
Foundations of Factor Investing (msci.com)
Start reading equity research (top tier bank stuff) and keep note of what they track and what drives their views. I'd focus on a specific industry.
Thanks for the recommendations. Is there a site that aggregates sellside reports? I currently use a database called Mergent Investext that my school provides to search for them. Just wondering if theres anything better I could do.
It's very cool of you to do this. But, geez, go and enjoy your vacation man!
Are you just trying to get free new stock ideas!
Just kidding... sort of....
