have an offer to work w PM based in HK

I sit in EST. 12 hours time difference. Does anyone have any experience with how this works? any best practices? L/S equity, market neutral - would be doing work on U.S. names

Specifically: how does communication work when your PM sits in the opposite timezone?

Working with a PM in Hong Kong while sitting in EST (12-hour time difference) can be challenging but manageable with the right strategies. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some best practices:

  1. Time Zone Optimization:

    • Identify overlapping hours that work for both parties. For a 12-hour difference, early mornings (7-9 AM EST) or late evenings (7-9 PM EST) are often the best windows for communication. These times align with the PM's evening or morning, respectively.
    • Stick to a consistent schedule for calls or updates during these overlapping hours to establish a routine.
  2. Asynchronous Communication:

    • Use tools like email, Slack, or shared documents to communicate updates and tasks asynchronously. This ensures that work progresses even when one party is offline.
    • Clearly document your analysis, questions, or updates so the PM can review them during their working hours.
  3. Efficient Meetings:

    • Prepare thoroughly for any scheduled calls. Use the time to address key points, ask questions, and clarify priorities.
    • Keep meetings concise and focused to respect the limited overlap in working hours.
  4. Leverage Technology:

    • Utilize shared platforms for tracking tasks, research, and deliverables. Tools like Trello, Asana, or even Google Sheets can help maintain transparency and organization.
    • Video conferencing tools (Zoom, Microsoft Teams) are essential for maintaining a personal connection despite the distance.
  5. Flexibility and Adaptability:

    • Be prepared to adjust your schedule occasionally for critical discussions or deadlines. This might mean taking a call late at night or early in the morning.
    • Communicate your availability clearly and be proactive in suggesting times for meetings.
  6. Build Trust Through Proactive Updates:

    • Since you won’t always be able to communicate in real-time, provide regular updates on your progress. This helps build trust and ensures the PM is always informed.
  7. Cultural and Regional Awareness:

    • Working with someone in Hong Kong may involve understanding cultural nuances or market-specific practices. Take the time to familiarize yourself with these to enhance collaboration.

By implementing these strategies, you can effectively manage the time difference and maintain a productive working relationship with your PM.

Have never been in this exact situation, but did have managers on the other side of the globe. Also happen to know some PMs who moved to HK specifically for taxes but are still mostly trading US market. With a time zone difference it is more important to document and share your thoughts for the PM to review during his day. The PMs usually work late to also have overlap with portfolio financing etc. I'd maximize your mornings.
