Quick question for you. I will be starting at a hedge fund directly after undergrad in about a month. Generally speaking, what is the dress code at a hedge fund? There are about 25 people in the office, and everyone seemed to dress fairly business casual, but I'm not sure if anything's expected differently from someone right out of undergrad.
Basically you started this just to brag about starting at a hedge fund out of undergrad....
i'd go with "fairly business casual"... unless you want to set yourself apart from the crowd, then the options are endless
so most people were wearing some kind of combination of pullovers/button downs with slacks/jeans. jeans I probably would not wear but besides that does that sound fine?
We are very casual and wear jeans, button downs, and a nice pair of tennis shoes. I remember dressing a bit nicer for the first few months (tucking in shirt, etc.) - eventually you just don't care anymore. People care more about what you are saying than what you are wearing.
You could always just email the person you interviewed with/whoever gave you your offer and ask them what the expected dress code is.
So someone can land an HF job out of undergrad but can't figure out that this is obvious answer?
HF's are just too varied to say that they all dress this way or that. I know HF guys in midtown Manhattan who dress like software guys in Palo Alto and I know HF guys in the burbs who dress like a banking MD pitching IBM.
@Dingdong08 I did specifically e-mail the MD who gave me the position, and he told me "it varies." Now you see my confusion
Ridiculous question, it depends on the fund. I know guys who wear shorts and flip flops in the summer. It's business casual here M-T and Fridays are jeans and a T-shirt
This site gets more and more ridiculous everyday... how is this a valid question? Granted OP had the competence to land a job at a fund out of undergrad, you'd think he could manage to dress himself.
Man you guys are lucky. All the shops I've worked at so far have been business formal because the partners running the ship are super conservative.
I always wore a hoody outside of work - while commuting. I entered and left the building at nights wearing a hoody. Everyone saw it and I think they all in some weird way respected that. But throughout the day as a junior I wore a great quality suit. I always kept a tie just in case I was having a meeting at work or outside.
You should do more of what your senior most guy asks you to do. Don't necessarily have to listen to colleagues at your level.
My direct colleagues + or - 1 year wore chinos etc and leather but a bit fancy shoes (so not the usual round cut) and it was all fine. But I was always appreciated directly by the PM for being the best dressed man. It shows discipline, humility and dedication due to the fact you've invested in a decent wardrobe even when you aren't making much as a junior in the firm.
i wear just a shirt with jeans or colorful chinos (depending on the mood) - tucked out. some guys tuck it in but i hate that look... it reminds of me how my father used to dress..
but before i started dressing like that.. i remember in my first few weeks, i pretty much wore a suit without a jacket. and thats what you should do as well. you dont want to come off as an entitled asshole by dressing loosely even if everyone already does and just because they say you can.
perception matters a lot and if you show bit of humility and dress up for just a little while, that pays dividends in ways you can't even quantify.
and eventually, you can start dressing down.. but i would leave the sport shirts and chinos tucked away in the closet for at least a few weeks to a month.

Generally speaking, it is probably impossible to tell you without knowing the firm, because dress codes vary from firm to firm. I'm honestly surprised you didn't name drop the exact fund at this point.
