Hedge Funds Hiring Internationals (Intls) on F1 and H1B

Hi all, I wanted to know which hedge funds hire internationals on F1 (aka without H1B) and those which hire with H1B.

I am more interested in the former (i.e. F1) as I am aware that a lot more HFs start hiring people with H1B. Thanks for your help!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, hedge funds generally have varying policies when it comes to hiring international students on F1 visas or sponsoring H1B visas. While specific hedge funds hiring under F1 visa conditions are not explicitly listed in the context, here are some insights:

  1. Hedge Funds Hiring Internationals with H1B Sponsorship:

    • Many hedge funds are open to hiring internationals with H1B sponsorship, especially larger and more established firms. Examples of prominent hedge funds that are known for hiring internationals include:
      • D.E. Shaw
      • Citadel Investment Group
      • Two Sigma Investments
      • Point72
      • AQR Capital Management
      • Millennium Partners
  2. Hedge Funds Hiring Internationals on F1 Visas:

    • Hiring under F1 visa conditions (without H1B sponsorship) is less common, as hedge funds often prefer candidates with work authorization that does not require sponsorship. However, some quant-based hedge funds or firms with a strong focus on technical skills may be more flexible in hiring F1 visa holders, provided the candidate demonstrates exceptional abilities in areas like quantitative analysis, programming, or generating profitable investment ideas.
  3. Advice for International Students:

    • If you're targeting hedge funds as an international student, focus on building a strong skill set in areas like financial modeling, investment idea generation, and quantitative analysis.
    • Prepare compelling investment ideas (one long and one short) to showcase your ability to generate value, as this can help differentiate you from other candidates.
    • Networking is crucial. Engage with professionals at hedge funds to understand their hiring policies and explore opportunities.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's recommended to directly reach out to recruiters or professionals at the hedge funds you're interested in.

Most big funds in NYC or CT handle F1/OPT without much of a headache, but the H1B sponsorship is where they get picky about the lottery risk. If you've got the capital or a solid partner, look into the E2 as a backup.

I worked with Davies & Associates to pivot from an F1 to an investment-based setup when my sponsorship path got murky. It’s a way more stable route if you want to run your own fund eventually.
