Hedge Funds moving to Florida

With HFs now moving to Florida, will UF and UMiami grow to become target/semi-target schools as students might benefit from the move by getting internships at these HFs and make them more employable and see an increase of FO on campus recruiting?

Could we also see an increase of UG students going straight to HF after graduation in Florida?

Went to one of these schools and if you've ever been on our campus you'll know that hedge fund tier talent is incredibly rare. I'm sure you can figure which of the two I'm talking about. Just being honest.

No, I wouldn’t expect it anytime soon (or ever really). Two things to note:

1) not many funds have setup offices in Florida. The ones that have are “testing the waters”, for the most part these are smaller offices. That’s not to say it won’t change, but it is still very easy so there aren’t many opportunities.

2) more importantly, the proximity to an office is a tiny advantage and almost 0 for the HF world. Yes, places like Baruch will have better finance placement than other similarly ranked places due to their NYC location, but it is a minor advantage and as I noted earlier HFs are extremely selective. HFs take few people, so the location doesn’t matter they can afford to pick whoever they want. I also don’t know you think this would lead to more people going into HFs directly from undergrad.

I live in FL and go to UMiami. To be honest we're starting to place extremely well these past couple years (IB, S&T, AM, MBB, etc.) but the USNWR T25 still has the upper hand over us. We don't place directly into many buyside funds, just because you'd be competing with Ivy League guys who've paid their 2 year dues at JPM/GS/MS. But I definitely have been seeing a trend of UF/Miami alums going to NYC, working 2-3 years, and then moving back down to FL to go buyside, albeit at smaller shops. There's also the RJ/WF/STRH crowd that's already in the South, a lot of them stay local. But I'd say it'll be 2030 or 2040 before you see FL as a (somewhat) relevant buyside space for larger hedge funds.

That's amazing! I applied EA. Hope it works out for you... Miami is an incredible place to spend 4 years. The social/party scene is just insane, plus the weather, and the academics are only getting better every year. PM me if you need anything, happy to help

Yea the rising academics, weather and growing presence of finance in Miami is one of the main reasons why I applied ED. But my SAT is only in the middle/lower 50% so.... I’m kinda freaking out rn and probably will until December comes 😂

Honestly we went test optional this year, so I wouldn't worry too much. Looks like tons of kids are gonna skip over sending SAT/ACT scores. And honestly, just from talking to people around campus it seems like Miami cares a lot more about teacher recs and essays, and just personality overall
