Hedge funds with Quantamental Biotech teams?
Wanted to know if theres any hedge funds out there that run a Quantamental book within the Biotech space? Quantamental means anyone using data effectively to drive day -to -day trading decisions. Quantamentals are generally more in multistrat HF's L/S consumer space. Have only heard someone in Ashler who does this.
Asking because its that time of the year when you worked well and learned a lot but you know your company structure enough that it wont lead to anything.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, quantamental strategies are indeed more commonly associated with multi-strategy hedge funds (MMs) and are often applied in sectors like consumer or tech. However, there are hedge funds that apply quantamental approaches in the biotech space, though they may be less prevalent.
Here are some insights:
Ashler Capital: As you mentioned, Ashler (a Citadel equity business) is known for its sector-specific expertise, and it wouldn't be surprising if they have a quantamental approach within biotech, given their focus on leveraging data and fundamental insights.
Point72 (Cubist Systematic Strategies): Point72 has been known to embrace quantamental strategies across various sectors. While biotech isn't explicitly highlighted, their multi-strat nature and focus on innovation make it a possibility.
Two Sigma: While primarily quant-driven, Two Sigma has been exploring hybrid approaches, and their focus on data-driven decision-making could extend to biotech.
Renaissance Technologies: Though RenTech is heavily quant-focused, their systematic approach might overlap with quantamental strategies in niche areas like biotech.
D.E. Shaw: Known for blending quantitative and fundamental strategies, D.E. Shaw could potentially have teams or books focused on biotech using a quantamental approach.
Sector-Specific Funds: Some smaller or boutique hedge funds specializing in healthcare or biotech might also adopt quantamental strategies, though they may not be as widely publicized.
If you're looking to transition, networking within the healthcare/biotech hedge fund community and targeting multi-strat funds with a reputation for innovation (like Citadel, Point72, or D.E. Shaw) could be a good starting point.
