How do you learn to interpret the news?
apologies if this is the wrong forum
still have never had a real investing role and my SA is this summer, and one of the things I am struggling with is translating headlines into 2nd/3rd level consequences - i.e. every easy to look at potential china tariffs and assume that a railroad stock is gonna do bad (clear line of thinking), but I have no idea how to think about more complex systems
ust want to expose myself to that type of thinking, and learn how to set up a mental model for interpreting news I guess - any advice would be great!
After you have established that then ask yourself a series of follow up questions. Which railroad company is most exposed? What’s the industry dynamic…do they have pricing power or are margins gonna get squeezed? What’s their cargo mix? Can they switch their cargo mix? What does this mean for steel plants, auto manufacturers, furniture stores etc. Morale of story is you just have to think about it and I guess eventually it boils down to pattern recognition. Can read lots of history to get better at predictions.
What do others think others are gonna think?
How much of this news was already anticipated / priced in?
Is it just a random new bit, or does it impact/change the key discussions around the stock?
Explicabo explicabo saepe neque laboriosam rerum quia. Iusto sit sed est at iusto ducimus aliquid. Voluptatem nemo molestiae officiis veritatis.
