How often do you check prices of your holdings ?
I'm new in the industry and I feel like I spend a bit too much time in front of prices.
So I wanted to have your view on : How many times per day do you/your peers check prices of your holdings ?
Thanks
All day every day
I was only part of one of the MM summer programs, but I’m returning FT. PM I learned from said that the best juniors don’t spend much time looking at holdings, leaving that for PMs/those running a sleeve. Spend days doing research/modeling/calls instead.
As often as my PM asks me "hey, what is this down 3%"
This is the real answer!
At some cute places, PM will tell junior analysts that he doesn’t want you to focus on stock prices and just the analyses.
Most HFs are more dynamic and you get yelled at for 1) not knowing why a stock is down 2pc and 2) not telling the PM it was going to be down 2pc and telling him to cut.
Yah, good times lol.
that's literally your job as analyst though
Dont look at px or holdings. Just put your head down and crunch numbers.
At the end of yr, PM gets paid on million dollar performance fee and analyst would be happy to take home 300-500k because analyst has no clue how much money is making…
Any PMs who tells the analysts to “only” focus on analyses and numbers are bad ones to avoid!!
If I’m bored at my desk - I literally take cursory glances at my watch list every other minute or something. But usually am on calls or in meetings so then I don’t check much
Thanks all for your insightful comments !
Finally, to stay on a day-to-day life of an analyst, how many screens do you have ? I have only 2 and I dont understand why some people need 6+ screens ?
