How to Choose Between Offers

Hi all,

As a sophomore deciding between offers (two top hedge funds, will PM if more info needed), are there any particularly good ways to compare companies/make a good decision? I have stopped interviewing and have a week to make a decision, and am unsure which to choose. I'm trying to think about it regarding junior year opportunities (I'd really like to try one out this summer, and the other the next).

Both offers are slightly quant-y but on the discretionary side of things - one seems to be a much broader perspective (could rotate between "macro" and "equities" desk, for example), the other is much more specialized (rotation between very specific projects and strategies). The former is less stressful overall, has more emphasis on collaboration than competition, with very low turnover, and people stay for a very long time. The latter is definitely more competitive than collaborative, seems to have much higher turnover, but lots more perks, higher comp and the group is really small and has a really high return offer rate.

What are some factors I could think about to help make my decision? I feel like I'd rather work at the less stressful one long-term, but I don't know what to do for this summer. I also don't want to jeopardize my relationship either company for next summer or the future, since this is my first finance internship and I don't know what I'm looking for yet. Send help!

It seems like you have two good choices, so there are no turkey wrong decision. Obviously it’d be great to do both but an offer could dry up if you skip on it for this summer. Most likely if you do well they might give you a return offer for next summer and possibly for a job. The firm you turn down may or may not give you that offer again. You’d be better off taking the internship at the one you’d rather work at. That being said, having interned at HF for one or even two summers could open tons of new doors at other firms, at the very least it’d give you some leverage in negotiations.
