How to get in touch with PMs who are hiring?

I work in sellside research and want to move to the buyside. Although headhunters and BD seem to be the most straightforward recruiting channel, they haven't gotten me any interviews. Referrals from friends seems to be the most common way people get jobs but I don't know a lot of people at HFs.

What should I do to proactively look for a job in that case? Should I DM every relevant PM I find online with my resume/pitch?

Buyside to buyside, especially intrasector HF to HF, can be quite an exercise in networking and referrals. Sellside to buyside is not really as much of a networking activity IME since you are an unknown and it’s just much harder. If BD is not getting you anywhere then it’s more likely your background isn’t up to par for whatever reason. Push them for feedback as well, see what you hear.

Spamming PMs at the platforms with pitches is extremely poor ROI since you don’t even know who is hiring or not. If you want to network, you should be talking with your bank’s sales desks. They are kings of networking and gossip and will most definitely know who is hiring. Granted you must have some tact and find someone trustworthy who isn’t gonna blab about your business to everyone, but they are an invaluable resource for job hunting from ER. Make a friend asap

Who should I be looking to talk to at my bank on the sales desk? Don't wanna randomly start talking about my business

Do you not talk to sales regularly as part of your daily job to sell your research and connect with clients? You should be lol. Do you not know which salespeople cover the accounts that are most interested in your work? If not, you are prob very junior which may be a reason you’re not getting looks at HFs. Current job market is still heavily tilted towards those with experience.
