How to get into the top pods

AN at an EB thinking about moving to pod. Can anyone comment on the difficulty of actually getting into a top pod. Obviously the platforms themselves are carousels and anyone has a shot. However for the actual BSD pods (tenured PM, several senior analysts running sleeves and bullpen of juniors) in these platforms how difficult is it and how do you even go for them?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights on getting into top pods at a multi-manager hedge fund (MMHF) like BAM, Millennium, or P72:

Difficulty and Strategy:

  1. Highly Competitive:

    • Getting into top pods with tenured PMs and senior analysts is extremely competitive. These positions are highly sought after due to the potential for better economics, clearer career paths, and significant responsibility early on.
  2. Experience and Skills:

    • Having a strong background in Investment Banking (IBD) or Private Equity (PE) is crucial. Your analytical skills, deal experience, and understanding of financial markets will be key differentiators.
  3. Networking:

    • Networking is essential. Building relationships with current employees at these firms can provide insights and potentially lead to referrals. Attend industry events, reach out to alumni, and leverage LinkedIn to connect with professionals in the field.
  4. Recruitment Process:

    • The recruitment process typically involves multiple rounds of interviews, including technical assessments, case studies, and fit interviews. Be prepared to demonstrate your investment acumen, market knowledge, and ability to generate alpha.
  5. Performance Track Record:

    • A proven track record of performance, whether in your current role or through personal investing, can significantly boost your chances. Highlight any successful investments or deals you have been involved in.
  6. Cultural Fit:

    • Each pod has its own culture and working style. Research the specific pods you are interested in and tailor your approach to align with their values and expectations.

Steps to Take:

  1. Refine Your Resume:

    • Ensure your resume highlights relevant experience, key achievements, and skills that align with the requirements of top pods.
  2. Prepare for Interviews:

    • Practice technical questions, market analysis, and case studies. Be ready to discuss your thought process and investment rationale in detail.
  3. Leverage Headhunters:

    • Engage with headhunters who specialize in hedge fund placements. They can provide valuable insights and help you navigate the recruitment process.
  4. Stay Informed:

    • Keep up-to-date with market trends, news, and developments in the hedge fund industry. This knowledge will be crucial during interviews and networking conversations.

By following these steps and leveraging your existing experience in IBD or PE, you can increase your chances of breaking into a top pod at a multi-manager hedge fund.

It should be fairly easy to get a job at a pod at C/M/P72, but I will say once you go through the interview process you will realize  that the pods you described are maybe 10-20% of what is offered. So it may take some time and being selective to make sure you are interviewing for the right team, also once you find the right team it is harder to land given there are lots of others looking to hop pods to a team like that

Would you say these PMs typically have preference for higher pedigree profiles? Whenever I see a top pod spin out (Woodline, Ilex, Candlesticks, Holocene) the analysts that join them either have top notch pedigree (EVR/PJT M&A/Rx/RSSG, 2+2s) or already multiple YOE at a pod.

"Fairly easy" is just not a true representation...especially Citadel

Feels like it’s pretty easy if you’re switched on and prepared. Had offers at 2 different pods when I graduated from my undergrad despite no FT xp.
