If you're very talented and lucky - hedge fund by a mile

If you're not - investment banking will likely give you better career earnings.

In terms of progression, it varies by bank and hedge fund, generally speaking at an investment bank you must pay your dues and spend an allotted amount of time in each role until you make VP. You may never progress beyond there and the process becomes more bureaucratic. Hedge fund hierarchies vary too much to give an exact response but there's usually just a couple roles: analyst and portfolio manager. Its more about how your responsibility changes over time and when you get P&L linkage; in this sense HFs allow talented people to progress faster.
