MA in International Relations into hedge fund offer?

I currently work as a junior muni trader at a boutique firm in. I am working on my CFA, and plan to stay here for the next 3-5 years for experience until I consider moving anywhere else. Ultimate goal is to move into the hedge fund world. Here is my conundrum:

I was accepted to American University's MA in International Relations program, and would really like to do it (applied before I received current job offer). I think having a global perspective on markets and the economy is important in todays environment, and might help later in my career. It's also a top program in the world. I would do it on a part-time, hybrid basis.

Obviously this is a non-traditional route to take in finance, but not totally unheard of. Right? Opinions? Anyone know of an IR guy making it into a hedge fund? I assume a CFA and trading experience will help.

Bottom line is I really love IR and geopolitics, but want to stay in finance. I think globalization and tech advances have made this perspective interesting and useful, but am unsure how common it is.
