MM L/S Internship -> Macro Fund/Pod

I signed an internship offer for this summer at a top MM in L/S equity, and I intend on trying my best during the program. However, I have always been a more quantitative person (majoring in math and CS). I recently came across rates trading, and I think I'm better cut out for macro of some sort.

Given this background, I'm wondering how I can get into a macro role in the future. I know a lot of people start in trading at BBs, but how do I land one of those roles full time without having done an internship? Is it also possible to get into a macro fund/pod directly?

I know people who have received offers from citadel GFI alongside specific teams at Brevan Howard, Bluecrest and other macro shops out of school. They usually went to a top school and were (very) good at their degrees (usually something quantitative or econ) and could code. They usually had some prior experience at a fund or BB S&T SA. Very reliant on networking.

If you’re doing P72 SA, there are people who have done the academy and ultimately placed in a macro pod (usually credit)

Do you generally think the grad programme at Brevan Howard is worth it? In terms of how the training compares to starting at a BB at a good desk? Also how did your friends handle recruiting if they did SA somewhere else, did they turn the return offers down or how did they manage it timeline wise?
