It’s incredibly difficult, but possible. Person I knew came from a non-target finance background but a T-15 CS school.
Undergrad or graduate level?
Undergrad
Yes, Jane Street trading resume screens are basically non existent
Non existent as in anyone gets past resume screens because it’s solely based on ability?
Yes, there is close to zero bar for passing the trading resume screen. Interview pass rates and return offer rates are quite low though.
Nope, don't get your hopes up. Work at some shit-tier shop for a few years and/or get PhD then maybe a firm like Jane Street will consider you as a non-target
I might get the phd unfortunately smh.
Yes - prob one of the most meritocratic processes
I think the last intern class had non-target / T20 schools (I remember seeing a kid from Georgetown Intern there).
Either way I think Jane Street is one of the few places that transcends target schools and "gaming" interviews. I think they'd take someone from a T30 school with an otherworldly intellect over an Ivy League student who Interned at their dad's friends HF. That's at least what their screening process seems like.
Echo this. They could care less if you couldn't get into Harvard because you didn't pack your college application with fake impressive achievements. They want raw intellect that is genetic.
Yeah, I was going to say that I thought I saw multiple interns there from schools like Michigan, Notre Dame, WashU, etc
They don't care at all what school you went to; but they have limited time and can't interview everyone. Graduating from a top 20 school doesn't guarantee you're smart but it does signal a higher probability, so naturally they focus their limited recruiting time there. You can still get an interview anyway from a non-target, but you'll probably have to work harder to get your foot in the door since they may not send a recruiter to your school.
But the real answer is stop mythologizing Jane Street as if that's your only goal for graduation. It's a great company that pays well, but there's lots of other great companies that (depending on your specific skills) might offer *you specifically* more than Jane Street would offer *you specifically*. Your question is like asking "How do I get signed to the Chicago Bulls?" as if you're not even thinking about any other NBA team. You ought to be looking for the best opportunity, and if that's Jane Street, great, but if some other fund will pay you more (even if it's a supposedly 2nd tier fund) then you should do that instead.
Help my goals come true then.
You don't really come across as someone with genius-level intellect
Guys with phds do it because they love it, you won't last if your only goal is to use it to get into Jane Street
There's nothing wrong with not being a genius because it's not a requirement for success, I know I'm not, so you have to be honest with yourself about what paths are suitable
Agree with this. There's a reason they pay so high - it requires an intellect that few have.
