Quant Developer Interview prep

I'm currently a junior in college, and I want to get a job as a quant developer or swe at a hedefund. My question is simply: What do I need to practice for these interviews? Keep in mind that I'm applying for internships and new grad roles. I know for a fact that I will need C++ and Leetcode, and I will probably be asked system design interviews. However, I'm not sure if I will need math/stats/prob. Will someone please tell me if i will be asked only leetcode and system design and c++ questions, or will there be a lot of math for these positions. If there is a difference between the swe and quant dev interviews, will someone please tell me them?

Ah, you're swinging through the jungle of quant interviews, I see! Here's the lowdown on what you should focus on for those interviews:

  • C++ Proficiency: You're right on the money with C++. It's the bread and butter for many quant developers, especially in high-frequency trading (HFT) firms. Make sure you understand both basic and advanced concepts, and can write efficient, clean code.

  • LeetCode Practice: Keep sharpening those coding skills with LeetCode. It's a great way to prepare for the technical aspects of the interviews. Focus on algorithms and data structures, as these are often the core of coding interviews.

  • System Design: For software engineering roles, system design interviews are common. You should be able to design scalable, efficient systems and discuss trade-offs.

  • Math/Stats/Probability: Now, here's where it gets a bit tricky. For quant developer roles, you'll likely need a solid grasp of math, statistics, and probability. These subjects are crucial for understanding the financial models and algorithms you'll be working with.

  • Differences Between SWE and Quant Dev Interviews: The main difference is the depth of mathematical knowledge required. SWE roles may focus more on software engineering principles and system design, while quant dev roles will also include math-heavy questions related to financial models and algorithms.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, it's clear that for quant roles, you should also be ready for brainteasers, statistics questions (like deriving linear regression), and potentially some machine learning concepts. It's not just about coding; it's about applying that coding to quantitative problems.

So, in summary, yes, you will need to be prepared for LeetCode and system design questions, but don't neglect the math/stats/prob side of things for quant dev roles. Each firm may have a slightly different emphasis, but a well-rounded skill set will serve you well. Swing high, and good luck!
