Hey monkeys,
I have been lurking in the shadows for a while now and I figured it was about time to post. I have been interning at a big nyc hedgefund for the past 4 months in accounting. My boss just offered me a year round position(part time during school, full time on holidays)
Obviously my goal is not to stay in accounting but to get a coveted front office role. He said that I should switch my major to accounting and I can work year round at the hedgefund and accumulate enough hours to qualify for my CPA while still in college. The only problem is I go to a non target just outside of nyc that has a few grads on the street.
So my idea is maintain a high gpa, have a lot of experience during college and have a CPA upon graduating. Then hopefully able to get my MBA a few years after graduation from Stern or Columbia What do you think my chances of moving to front office at some point are?

Why don't you take your boss out to lunch/coffee/after dinner drinks and be like "Hey, long-term I don't want to be an accountant. I want to do what you do. What do you recommend?"

He gets to talk about himself (bosses love that), give advice to a youngling (bosses love that), and you get legitimate advice and don't get shoehorned into something you don't want to do.

There's always that slight chance that being upfront could backfire, but there's that slight chance with anything you do. In my experience, being that employee who has the balls to be upfront with, while still being respectful of, some big shot will earn you major points in that big shot's eyes. Almost all of my accomplishments I attribute to balls & people skills.

Thanks for the response, but I think it is too early to tell him I do not want to be an accountant, also he is a fund controller so he is in the back office with all of us. I am not sure if he would even have enough influence to help get me in the front office even if he wanted to. I know they are not going to want to take me on as an acocunting intern for the next 2 years if I make it seem like I have no interest in accounting. I think by staying there and becoming a CPA upon graduating college I am going to be able to make myself more desirable for one of the target mba programs. Maybe after I have proved myself at the company I could express my interest in moving within the company. I just want to know if this is realistic or is it near impossible. Thanks! All advice is appreciated!

Oh my bad. For some reason I didn't think "boss" meant "controller." I took it as the boss was the MD of the office or something and would be a good person to come out to about your front office ambitions. Dumb logical jump on my part, sorry

Proving yourself more and then rebranding doesn't sound like a bad idea
