Recruiters are not negotiators

Don’t feel like my recruiter is trying to get me the most $ possible. I am in the 5th round of interviews for a HF. Next round is meeting with the founders. Recruiter told me to let him do the negotiations around salary. I understand he got me the first interview, but I’ve been through 4 rounds and a day at the office interviewing with the CFO, COO, admins and traders. I know I am much smarter than this recruiter. I am wondering when I should take this into my own hands.

The slander smh…

I’d be curious to know what the comp discussions have been like so far. No way a conversation with the founders at the end of the process is going to be the first time comp is discussed (if at all, it’s generally a formality).

Recruiter probably doesn’t wanna see you shoot yourself in the foot say a number that’s drastically different than what’s already been discussed to the founder of all people and blow even getting an offer in the first place. There’s plenty of time to negotiate within the proper channels thereafter.

End of day you always do what’s best for you. BOL.

a recruiter would rather have a guaranteed comission for a $300k analyst than gamble 80%/20% for a $350k analyst. Yes he's possibly leaving $10k on the table, but in the time it takes to negotiate back and forth, he could have placed another candidate at another fund or burned his relationship with the BD office for being annoying. It's really not worth it from his perspective. You can be certain that whatever the recruiter negotiates, you're not being massively underpaid, but he's not going to squeeze out every last penny either

Don't feel like my recruiter is trying to get me the most $ possible...I know I am much smarter than this recruiter.

Don't be so sure. He has mostly similar incentives as you to maximize your first year comp. (Yes, he's willing to take a quick payday rather than losing the sale and getting nothing by pushing too hard for an extra few bucks; but TBH, you'd do the same thing for yourself depending on how desperate you are for a new job). Chances are very high he knows more than you about what this company is willing to pay for the role for a person with your skills. He has probably placed several other people at the company. And maybe you're a great negotiator, but most people aren't, and there's a good chance this guy is more practiced at it than you.

In any case, if you're unhappy with the guy, don't work with him again. But now that he's already started negotiations with this company, it doesn't look great for you to also call the company directly. For better or worse, you're kindof stuck with the guy on this particular job interview.
