Recruiting for HF

I just started my senior year at my non-target school after completing a summer internship at an EB in coverage and signing my FT offer. I'm in a pretty specialized industry group (think FIG / Energy / Real Estate). After doing two years as an analyst, I want to go into SM HF, preferably value investing, events, or activism. I know these are tough seats to land and the recruiting process is far less structured than PE. I was wondering if anyone had any insights or advice they could share that I could use to start preparing. Is it important to network the same way it's important for IB?
