Recruiting for HF from Growth Buyout

I'm currently a first year - a few months in at a Growth Equity / Buyout Shop (Not Megafund, more MM). I initially picked my gig due to location and desire to take some risk at a growing firm, but I'm quickly realizing that I desire a more intellectually intense and stimulating style of investing and curious if anyone can offer thoughts about recruiting to publics from this spot. Particularly, I would be interested in joining a Pod and I am okay with taking a short term pay cut for more interesting work.

Appreciate any honest advice. I also have a background in math / cs and do have a desire to integrate these interests, so if there's any roles that could use both my training from banking / pe and have more data / engineering or computer science element, I am all ears.

As more context on why suddenly publics (given that growth privates is pretty much the antithesis)

My current gig involves both sourcing and deep traditional PE style diligence. I recruited my gig during on-cycle and given my tech background, I wanted to have optionality to get a skillset to later move in an operational role at a tech startup / founder or continue being an investor in either public or private markets. After time in my current gig, I think moving to a L/S could be the right move as my dissatisfaction from my current job stems largely from being largely unimpressed with the problem of taking complete detailed information to do diligence on private companies and a much deeper intellectual interest in the problem of piecing together public information to form a thesis on publics.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights and advice for transitioning from a Growth Equity/Buyout Shop to a Hedge Fund (HF), particularly a Long/Short (L/S) Pod:

Key Considerations for Transitioning:

  1. Intellectual Stimulation:

    • Hedge Funds, especially L/S Pods, offer a more dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment compared to traditional PE. The focus on public markets requires constant analysis and adaptation to new information, which aligns with your desire for a more intense investing style.
  2. Skillset Integration:

    • Your background in math and computer science can be a significant asset. Many HFs value quantitative skills and the ability to integrate data analysis and engineering into investment strategies. Look for roles that emphasize quantitative research, algorithmic trading, or data-driven investment approaches.
  3. Recruiting Strategy:

    • Networking is crucial. Reach out to recruiters who specialize in HF placements and leverage any connections you have in the industry. Highlight your unique skill set and your desire to transition to a more intellectually challenging role.
    • Tailor your resume to emphasize your analytical skills, technical background, and any relevant experience in public markets or quantitative analysis.
  4. Short-Term Pay Cut:

    • Be prepared for a potential short-term pay cut. Transitioning to a new role, especially in a different segment of finance, might initially come with lower compensation. However, the long-term benefits of finding a more fulfilling and stimulating career path can outweigh the short-term financial considerations.

Potential Roles:

  1. Quantitative Research Analyst:

    • Focuses on developing and implementing quantitative models to inform investment decisions. This role would allow you to leverage your math and CS background.
  2. Data Scientist:

    • Works on extracting insights from large datasets to support trading strategies. This role combines data engineering with investment analysis.
  3. Algorithmic Trader:

    • Involves developing and executing automated trading strategies. This role requires strong programming skills and an understanding of market dynamics.

Additional Advice:

  • Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest trends and developments in public markets and quantitative finance. This will help you during interviews and in making a successful transition.
  • Build a Strong Case: Be ready to articulate why you want to move from private to public markets and how your current experience and skills will add value to a HF.

By focusing on these areas, you can position yourself effectively for a transition to a Hedge Fund role that aligns with your intellectual interests and technical skills.
