Select Equity Group - any insights appreciated!

Hi guys:

Does any one happen to know about Select Equity Group with regard to hiring, headhunters they use, and culture? Do they hire post-MBA/post-PE? Who are the headhunters they use?

How is the culture as well as the people they like to work with?

Thanks!

Following. Is it legitimate enough to get you a job at a place like citadel or p72 after?

I’ll never understand why people find MM analyst seats desirable.

Large SMs offer better risk-adjusted pay, lifestyle, stability. Senior analysts at SM  have the option to become a PM at a MM if they ever want to run a book. That’s the only reason someone from Select might make the switch.

Genuine question....what is the hype about this place? Are they supposed to be a Sequoia or something? Do they actually put up good numbers?

I remember doing a 2x1 call with a mgmt team last year and the Select Equity analyst introduced herself with such grandiose. "You may have heard this about us but one thing that makes our firm stand out is we do not look any sellside research and originate our own thesis on companies without bias". Close to exact words, not even kidding. I was like "hey yeah, I'm X." Then let her jabber on for an hour.

Sequoia was very prestigious when it was $15B at 1% generating $150mm a year to pay for that fancy top floor at 9W57. Not so much anymore. Maybe Select Equity is 20-30B at 1% growing AUM like Baron. Sounds pretty good / explains the hype around it. Not sure how many pure mutual funds are still around at that size / 1% fees with that small of an investment team and (likely) direct distribution to institutional AUM
