To maximize your chances for sophomore summer internships in IB or hedge funds (HF), here’s a breakdown of actionable steps based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Networking Timeline

  • Start Networking Now: Networking is critical, especially for sophomore summer roles. Begin reaching out to alumni, professionals, and recruiters at banks and funds immediately.
  • Focus on Boutique IBs: Many BBs and EBs don’t have structured sophomore programs, but boutique firms often hire sophomores. Networking with boutique firms can help you secure a position that strengthens your resume for junior year recruiting.
  • Leverage Your School’s Network: Berkeley is a semi-target for many firms, so use alumni connections and career services to your advantage. Build strong relationships with a few key contacts rather than spreading yourself too thin.

2. Recruiting for Sophomore Summer

  • Target Firms with Sophomore Programs: Some BBs (e.g., Citi, UBS) and firms like Millennium (for cap dev) offer sophomore-specific programs. Keep an eye on their application timelines, as some open in the fall.
  • Apply to Hedge Funds: Your buyside deal origination experience is a strong asset. Highlight this in your applications to hedge funds, especially those with sophomore programs.
  • Boutique IBs: Many boutique firms don’t have structured recruiting timelines, so reach out directly to inquire about opportunities. Start emailing MDs and associates at these firms now.

3. Positioning Yourself

  • Highlight Your Experience: Your buyside deal origination internship is impressive for a rising sophomore. Emphasize your exposure to deal flow, financial analysis, and any modeling experience.
  • Core Business Classes: Having most of your core business classes done by the first semester is a strong signal of your academic rigor. Mention this in conversations and applications to show you’re ahead of the curve.

4. Fit for Millennium’s Cap Dev Program

  • Strong Fit: Your buyside experience and early completion of core business classes make you a strong candidate for Millennium’s cap dev program. These programs often look for candidates with analytical skills, deal experience, and a demonstrated interest in finance.
  • Next Steps: Research the program’s specific requirements and timeline. Network with current or former participants to understand what they look for in candidates.

5. General Tips

  • Take Financial Modeling Courses: If you haven’t already, consider taking financial modeling courses to strengthen your technical skills. This will be valuable for both IB and HF roles.
  • Prepare for Behavioral and Technical Interviews: Start practicing common IB and HF interview questions. Use resources like the WSO IB Interview Guide to prepare.
  • Stay Persistent: Recruiting for sophomore summer roles can be competitive, but persistence and networking will pay off.

By starting early, leveraging your experience, and targeting the right firms, you’ll position yourself well for sophomore summer recruiting. Good luck!
