Tips on Adopting L/S Mindset
Hey all,
2nd year in college, actively recruiting for MM 2026 undergrad pod programs in L/S. Struggling to find resources to get myself up to date on the L/S mindset. For context, I have studied traditional value investing and know how to develop a solid pitch, but I'm struggling to find resources on how to do the same for L/S (shorter investment horizons, quarter-on-quarter trades, earnings focused, hard catalysts, thinking about valuations, etc). Would greatly appreciate any help to guide me in the right direction, thanks!
To adopt the L/S mindset effectively, here are some actionable tips based on the most helpful WSO content:
Understand the Key Differences: Unlike traditional value investing, L/S strategies often focus on shorter investment horizons, quarterly trades, and earnings-driven catalysts. This requires a shift in mindset to prioritize timing, valuation misperceptions, and hard catalysts over long-term fundamentals.
Pattern Recognition: To improve your ability to generate short-term ideas, study examples of quarterly L/S pitches. While these are rare, forums like WSO and platforms like SumZero or VIC can provide insights. Focus on identifying mispriced stocks within a specific set of criteria, as only 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 might truly fit the bill.
Eliminate False Heuristics: Avoid relying solely on single metrics like ROIC or EPS. Instead, develop a nuanced understanding of what drives a stock's movement in the short term. Resources like Kahneman, Mauboussin, and Montier can help refine your thinking.
Catalyst-Driven Thinking: Focus on identifying clear catalysts that could drive stock price movements. This could include earnings surprises, management changes, or industry-specific events. Always ask, "Why now?" when evaluating an investment.
Valuation and Timing: Learn to think about valuation in the context of timing. For example, a stock might look cheap, but without a near-term catalyst, it may not move. This is a critical distinction from traditional value investing.
Resources to Explore:
Practical Application: Start by pitching short-term ideas with clear catalysts and valuation frameworks. Use forums like WSO to get feedback and iterate on your approach.
By focusing on these areas, you'll be better equipped to transition from traditional value investing to the fast-paced, catalyst-driven world of L/S strategies.

no one is expecting you to come in with an analyst’s mindset. There’s a chance no one will ask you for a pitch either; funnily enough the interview process for the pod SA and grad schemes can be p inconsistent ime
