What HF are available to me from CBS MBA and CFA?

Getting ready to enter CBS class of ‘25. Have 6 years total of equity research (tech and small buyside startup as VP of Research) and FI strategy (top AM, focused on relative value and short duration FI for HF/Pension/CB clients) experience, and have been CFA Charterholder since 2021. I’m being asked to provide a list of companies I want to work for before the semester begins. Which HF should I put here if any? Always been my goal to work at a HF and now with the experience and credentials it feels like now or never.

Same question here. Maybe at these top programs, they actively pass your resume to the firms you want to work at, and they ask you for your own list

Target HFs that fit your criteria:

  • Quant vs Quali
  • Pod Shop vs Single Manager
  • Strategy
  • Culture/Career progression
  • Risk-aversion

And then sort by performance per different periods (ex.: 5, 10, 20 years). That HF that was booming 20 years ago may be radically different now given a change in management (personnel or mentality), size.

Also depends on exit strategies. Joining a P72 or Bridgewater will certainly turn heads due to the prestige, and so exit opps. will be more plentiful. However, career progression may be stunted due to fund size and competition. A smaller, younger fund may be more fun because they may be hungrier and less risk-averse.

Anyway, ultimately understand that going the HF route you really have to love markets cause if you enter the market at a wrong timing (ex: the year before 08 or 22 (if tech), you will likely get caught in the headcount reduction). Also, after making your track record, if it sucks, good luck cause it is gonna get really tough job-hunting. It is a shitty job stability-wise. But damn it, it is amazingly exhilarating
