What to expect for interviews?

Complete newbie here. Second year in PE and have been getting inbounds for different funds but have never thought about going the HF route. If I decide to go through with an interview what should I expect / what should I prepare for?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about hedge fund interviews:

  1. Preparation Basics:

    • Research the fund: Understand its size, location, history, and strategy. Check their website and LinkedIn profiles of employees.
    • Know the portfolio manager: Hedge fund interviews often depend heavily on the portfolio manager, so understanding their style and focus is crucial.
  2. Cultural Fit:

    • Hedge funds prioritize cultural fit more than private equity. If you can't connect with the interviewer during a short meeting, it might indicate challenges working together long-term.
  3. Technical and Investment Knowledge:

    • Be ready to discuss your investment philosophy and how you think about deploying capital.
    • Prepare to talk about your deal experience from PE, focusing on valuation work, due diligence, and why a company was or wasn’t a good buyout target.
    • You might be asked to pitch a stock or discuss an investment idea. Be thorough in your analysis, including risks and how you'd hedge against them.
  4. Behavioral Questions:

    • Expect questions like "Why hedge funds?" or "What do you expect to learn from this experience?".
    • Be prepared to walk through your resume and explain your story, motivations, and career goals.
  5. Case Studies:

    • Some funds may include case studies or practical exercises, such as a paper LBO or analyzing a potential investment. Brush up on your technical skills and frameworks.
  6. Networking Insights:

    • Leverage your network to understand the specific preferences of the fund you're interviewing with. This can give you an edge in tailoring your responses.
