RWA Tokenization: Where Is the Real Institutional Value?

The technology makes it possible to represent assets such as private credit, real estate, funds, commodities and carbon credits on-chain. But the bigger question may be whether tokenization materially improves the economics and operations of these assets.

For an institutional investor, the potential benefits could include:

  • Faster settlement and reduced reconciliation

  • Lower administrative and transfer costs

  • More transparent ownership records

  • Automated compliance and transfer restrictions

  • Fractional access to certain asset classes

  • Improved reporting and auditability

  • Potentially broader investor distribution

  • Integration with digital custody and settlement infrastructure

At the same time, tokenization doesn't remove the traditional requirements around legal ownership, investor eligibility, custody, AML/KYC, reporting and regulatory compliance.

That makes me wonder where the real value is being created.

For those working in private markets, asset management, banking or fintech:

Where do you see the strongest business case for RWA tokenization today?

Is it primarily:

  1. Operational efficiency

  2. Lower issuance and settlement costs

  3. Access to new investors

  4. Improved liquidity

  5. Compliance automation

  6. Transparency and reporting

  7. Something else?

And for firms considering implementation, would you rather build the infrastructure internally or work with a specialized RWA/tokenization technology provider?
